Royal Enfield Unveils 2014 Cafe Racer http://www.motorcycledaily.com/2012/12/royal-enfield-unveils-2014-cafe-racer/ At last week’s Long Beach Motorcycle Show, one of the best looking bikes was a simple Cafe Racer introduced by Royal Enfield. The bike will be designated a 2014 model when it is introduced in the summer of 2013. The air-cooled single has been punched out to 535cc, and makes an additional 9 horsepower over the standard single-cylinder Royal Enfield models. It is also 47 pounds lighter, bringing claimed weight into the range of 360 pounds. The expected price is $7,295.00 in the U.S. market. Several accessories include a two-person seat and clubman bars. I want one! The video of the unveiling is worth watching for two reasons, including (1) the beautiful Cafe Racer can be seen from several different angles, and (2) the enthusiasm of the small U.S. Royal Enfield crew is easily sensed in the speaker’s voice.

That would be a cool toy/hobby bike, they got the styling right. But, I'd rather have a Thruxton. Read the reviews at the article, one guy claims 2/3 of the demo bikes had issues after the first rides on a RE Demo Day event. This might be a great bike for a married guy who's wife knows how to backup a bike trailer.

Buy one, throw the motor away, and install a rebuilt 64-69 500 or 650 cc Triumph motor, then you would have something I would lay money down for. Oh, and repaint the tank as well. Now we are cookin' with Crisco. Easier, buy a nice used Thrux for 5-6 thou. Ride it and polish it.

Yeah, I lusted for a retro styled Enfield a few months ago, even went to a dealer hundreds of miles away to look at it. The paint was barely ok, fit and finish was acceptable, but it was just physically a little small. Still, a good looking bike, and if I had plenty of cash lying around, I get one and take my chances.

I agree, they look nice in photos, but they need to really step up their quality if they think they are going to be selling for anywhere close to that

I read a lot of these remarks but I never see them backed up by owners complaints. Is it possible that they have a bad reputation by rumor and not by fact? Kinda like THAT girl in high shool who ended up being nice enough when you finally took time to get to know her? Not directed at you Dave but at all the negative vibes...I could only find one recall listed from 2009 and it was for 233 bikes...

I'm only going off of what I've actually seen whilst at the Enfield dealer in Eldorado Springs... I really think they photograph well, but on closer inspection, the castings are very rough and the welds look like they were made with a torch and a coat hanger... Why would I pay a comparable price of a Triumph to get flawed finish work? I want to like these bikes, and for a couple thousand dollars less than what they currently cost, I could live with the imperfections. But again, I would not do that for the same price I can get for another bike with machine welds and brushed finishes.

Aside from the quality, even for the lowest cost model of around $6,000 you are getting a 27 hp single cylinder 500cc motorcycle. For $7,699 you can get a basic Bonneville with a 865cc twin and 67 hp. Can you imagine having to do a stint on an interstate on one of these things?

That's more like it, first hand observation. They do photograph very well and the very fact they've been manufactured for half a century leads one to believe they can't be all bad. Thanks Dave, crappy welds will keep me away.

My friend owns one from new (the electric start RE- not this cafe version). It's a dog. Poor quality, poor finishing, unreliable electrics. No resale value - that's why he still owns it.

For $8K +, instead of a new 45 HP British bike with questionable electronics, you can get a used Jap bike with over three times the horsepower, MUCH better EVERYTHING (electronics, suspension, brakes, fit & finish, etc.), better mpg, better re-sale, ... well, you know. (or at least I do)

Kinda like the dude on the Triumph in the T-Mobil commercial??? Too bad ya couldn't make it to Georgia. I'd have introduced ya to the youngest person, on the oldest motorcycle, with the highest mileage (yep, Moe, the clocks been unhooked about half of it's life) in the group. That trip was over 2,500 miles, through four states, with out so much as a hicup. (not EVEN a broken cable) And THAT'S 70's technology! Peace!

Don,t know what they go like but some of the new ones I have seen at dealers have oil leak issues which does not inspire confidence i.e not the model shown so maybe they have improved?

Royal Enfield retooled there assembly line. Tightening tolerances on their motors and such. One of the rags had an article on it about 3 or 4 years ago. I wouldn't give up on them wholesale. Sometimes one needs to be Apostle Thomas.

I didn't think the fit and finish was "horrible". And as to welds, a pretty weld is nice, but even a crappy looking weld can hold together well enough. Sometimes my welding with my old stick welder will not look the greatest, depending on what kind of junk I'm welding on. But I've never had a weld break on me. I will relay this, however. Baxter Cycle was a RE dealer for a couple of years or so, but they dropped the line last fall. I couldn't get the "desk" people to tell me why, they just hedged around and finally said they wanted to concentrate more on their Triumph line up. Whatever. But buying a bike like the RE is not about getting the most horsepower for the buck. Or even getting super reliability. It's about riding a "classic" design, with all the vibration and inherent "flaws" of an antique cycle. I haven't traded in my 47 Chrysler, with it's hopelessly underpowered flathead motor, for a more powerful newer V8 car, cause I LIKE the "ambiance" of the old girl. You old fella's on here, (at least some of you), should know what I'm talkin about. If I ever buy a new RE, (and I might someday), I'm gonna ride it like the antique it is, slower as the horsepower dictates, and I'll enjoy the quirks as they come.

Rich, you are completely missing the point of buying a NEW motorcycle then. If you want an antique bike with classic design, flaws, crap reliability and minimal performance, there are plenty of them out there. When you buy something new off the showroom floor, it should be trouble free until the payments are over.

I understand Rich, I still ride my 64 BMW around and have fun on it. That bike makes 26hp at 5600 RPMs.

Nope, still disagree. A RE is an "new" antique style cycle. You're not buying something that is modern, but something which gives you that "old timey" ride and look. I suppose you could look for an actual antique RE, with limited results. Then you would have to find parts for it, a real problem. The idea behind buying a new RE is you can ride an antique bike, still find parts for it, and it is somewhat more modern with some "go" parts, such as electric start and electronic ignition. (Although, when I was looking at buying one, the dealer said some models could still be had with a kickstart, which I would definately hold out for.) Put it this way, Dave. If they brought out a brand new model "T" Ford car, with electric start and modern electrics, but basically the same motor and drivetrain, lots of fella's would buy them for their "nastalgia" value. They would enjoy putting around in an antique style car, and wouldn't care about getting there fast. It would just be fun, and you could drive it every day without worring about wearing an old bearing out, or something.

Dude, you know me and my love for the classic/vintage vehicle... hell, I don't even want to upgrade the 6V system on my '49 because it takes away from the originality... the new RE isn't the RE from 1955, and it doesn't have to be treated like such. It has fuel injection man! Style a brand new bike however you want, it still needs to be reliable like a brand new bike. A model T made today would be far superior to one made 80 years ago, just in machining tolerances and metallurgy alone, even following the exact same blueprint as the original. I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun to have, own, ride, play with, whatever, I'm just saying that it should be reliable enough to not have to worry about it breaking down. I tell you what, you want close to the original, go get yourself a Ural.

Dave, I'm SURE the new RE's ARE "better" than the vintage ones. Just like our Retro line of Triumphs are better than the vintage ones. (not necessarily more desirable, but better)

I see both sides of the coin. I agree that the new bike should be more reliable but given the old design it won't be a modern bike with modern reliability. That being said it shouldn't cost as much as a bike with superior reliability and power either. I agree given the cost I would buy another Triumph first. Knock a couple grand off it and I would want one with a kickstart and with any luck could retro fit points.

Hey, buddy, you forget, I DO have a Ural. (Or at least a Ural motor in a Dnepr frame. Remember the Russian Military surplus side car bike I bought two years ago?) But anyway, I don't neccesarily believe that the modern RE is a terrible machine. I just don't know. I've gone on the sites that talk about them, and most of the problems owners have is with the older models, or ordinary kinds of things. But I AM troubled by the fact that Baxter's dropped the line. Anyway, I'm not going to have any money to blow on a new toy for the foreseeable future, so we're just talkin.

I HAD a Velocette briefly, years ago. Long story short, it was a 350 "scrambler" type bike, had sat in a little old lady's garage for 15 years or so. I had initially gone to her place cause I heard through the grapevine that she had an old "English" bike she wanted to get rid of.(I thought it was gonna be a Trumpet) When I got there, I didn't know what the heck it was, but she was anxious to get rid of it so I gave her $50 for it. I asked around and parts were nearly impossible to get for it, so I sold it to Baxter's for $1800. Used the money to build my kids a cabin out in the woods. Someday I'll probably kick my rear cause maybe it will be worth a fortune? (My dealer friend looked at it and said it wasn't the model everybody wanted). Anyway, it was the quickest money I ever made at the time.

Okay, so my buddy now carries Royal Enfield at his shop Flying Tiger Motorcycles. I stopped by today to check his new lineup out since he just got them the other day. Took a few pics... This chrome bike had some ripples in the metal that were hard to photograph but were very noticeable. If this is the best weld someone can get with a wire feed welder, they need to go ahead and put it down. castings... $6850 out the door
Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

Damn, that's just funny. Looks like a 14 year old mixed up some J B weld on a piece of cardboard
