Got this in an e-mail a few days ago. VERY TRICKY ARITHMETIC! NOTE: THIS MUST BE DONE IN YOUR HEAD ONLY. DO NOT USE PAPER AND PENCIL OR A CALCULATOR. TRY IT. TAKE 1000 AND ADD 40 TO IT. NOW ADD ANOTHER 1000 NOW ADD 30. ADD ANOTHER 1000. NOW ADD 20 .. NOW ADD ANOTHER 1000. NOW ADD 10.. WHAT IS THE TOTAL? SCROLL DOWN FOR THE CORRECT ANSWER..... ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ DID YOU GET 5000? THE CORRECT ANSWER IS ACTUALLY 4100... IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IT, CHECK IT WITH A CALCULATOR! TODAY IS DEFINITELY NOT YOUR DAY, IS IT?

I got 4100. Not sure why people would think it's 5000.
1000 + 40 = 1040
1040 + 1000 = 2040
2040 30 = 2070
2070 + 1000 = 3070
3070 + 20 = 3090
3090 + 1000 = 4090
4090 + 10 = 4100

Okay, now THIS is driving me crazy here....okay, craziER, anyway!  Nope Mac, I don't think the word "take" has anything to do with this little mind-puzzler here, because if you break down the thing, there indeed are only 4 "1000"s and then all the double figure amounts which add up to 100. And so, after doing this math in my head at least four or five times now, I STILL come up with 5000!!! (...so, has anybody come up with where our minds are misleading us here???)

Yep, the repetitive addition of 1000s conditions us to count 1000 instead of 100 . . . isn't manipulation fun! 
I would be unstoppable if not for law enforcement and physics.

Probably the last part. You know it's 4090, but your brain is thinking 4900 + 100.

it's tricky but only if you follow the rules of the game... I took the 1000's and added them 4 times, then added the 40+30+20+10 for the 100. You have to simplify math every chance you get
