The BBC news is probably toned down a lot because it is more or less government run, but there are still plenty of violence using clubs, bricks, knives and rocks. Only difference is that the honest citizens can't defend themselves.
An interesting thing in Brit history, large numbers of firearms were borrowed (and many returned after the war) from the US citizens to arm the subjects of the crown so that they could obey Churchill and fight them from the hedgerows and doorways had the Germans managed to invade England. Of course, they were promptly disarmed again after VE day, can't say the government didn't learn their lesson from the colonies.
