Seems to me you could still recover from this by empathizing with your wife and the kid's family and friends. There are dozens or hunderds of people broken-hearted over the event. You're not one but you'd probably be wiser and certainly kinder to fake it.

Also, I did so many deeply, deeply stupid things in my teens and early 20's that it colours my thinking about drinking and driving even today. We don't tolerate it, but I sure understand it.
