Like you, I tend to have little empathy for stupidity and selfishness. And it makes me angry.

That is, until I am reminded that back in my teens it was almost socially acceptable to drive/ride drunk or under the influence and I did exactly that many times and was extremely fortunate not to have had a tragedy occur. Was i a thoughtless, stupid and irresponsible teen? Absolutely. And for a long time after my teens I am ashamed to admit.

Social acceptance for drunk driving has gone but kids wanting to get wasted on anything and at every opportunity hasn't changed at all. And neither has teens being mostly selfish, stupid and irresponsible.

So in your situation (where I've been all too often), I would just be honest and say they kids actions got me angry because two innocent parties died (one stupid innocent party) but I was forgetting that i did a lot of stupid stuff at her age and my judgement was too harsh. I'm sorry, it really is a tragedy.
