Has anyone here done this while still maintaining a front brake? I've read that this can be done, being hooked into the rear brake system and run through a proportioning valve. Any info with pictures would be really appreciated.

then you'd hafta run a line from the rear brake pedal all the way up to the front caliper. the front reservoir doesn't look THAT bad does it ?
and a proportioning valve would create some wierd stopping dynamics

As having locked up my front tire at 75 MPH for 50-60 feet to avoid becoming part of the multiple car crash in front of me, I think I can live with an unsightly master on the bars. If it ain't broke, don't fix it?

Wow! You stayed upright with the front locked up for 60 feet?

I credit that manoeuvre to the installation of Ricor Intimanators, no special riding skill on my part. After all, you are supposed to control all that adrenalin and not squeeze the lever as hard as you can, when your convinced you are about to die.

Excellent advice, obviously from someone who has NO fear of dying!
Great advice though, IF you can pull it off. (Also, your NOT suppose to sh1t your pants )

Yep Wade, and doesn't any brake reservoir have to sit higher than the master-cylinder(in this case it would be the hand lever, of course) in order for it to supply any needed brake fluid to the line by gravity feed?
I mean, I know the reason why all the first year BA's had that recall was because of the need to raise the rear brake reservoir so that it would always be higher than the rear master-cylinder just in case of a tip-over.
(...or am I wrong here?)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I want to maintain safe braking, and I'm not looking to lose that just to get rid of the huge reservoir we have. I know that I've seen a lot of customs that have a front brake with nothing bulky hanging off the handlebars. Was just looking for some input from someone around here who has gotten creative regarding this subject. I seem to remember seeing Exile with some internal handlebar/reservoir setup.

I have to agree with Ryk best thing we can do with our stock front ends is Intiminators cos they transform the less than average handling(imo) to thank f+ allthe demons that when you need it you got it.But after installing said little extras then the bling of hidden cylinders is gonna be rather nice methinks.

My 1979 BMW R100 had a cable link to a master cylinder under the tank. could be adapted I guess, but why introduce another item to fail?

What you need to do is determine the required caliper piston area (volume). The rear has smaller disc then the front, as I remember. So the rear caliper has a smaller area than the front. If you have a speedmaster don't forget you have two calipers in the front. Next you be to get a rear brake master cylinder assly. with the correct bore size to feed caliper area. I see here they have different "master cylinders" and a proportion valves.
Keep in mind that I am not a motorcycle mechanic and have not done this. I would think getting the proporting correct would be the hard part

Just goes to prove that the only boundaries to "Bolt on Coolness" is only limited by how much can you or want to spend. Now that little slave cylinder they sell on their site, looks to be a mountable component for a juice clutch conversion on our bikes, that would be a great upgrade, IMO.

I mounted a sport bike rear master under the tank, similar to a bmw setup- it's cable operated by a cheapo dirt bike lever- I'll try to dig up some pics- fab Kevin sells a universal kit to do the same thing but its pricey- fyi- dual disc=1/2 bore master cyl- single disc=9/16 bore-

My 03 America has this recall and dealer told me the reason was that the reservoir was re situated to lessen the chance that a rock etc would go though the casing which seemed logical at the time.

Good thing they relocated the oil filter too!
