This is a pretty good write up on the America but I'm curious...has the ergonomics for 2012/2103 shorten up that much? It seems from this review that the bike is made for a short person or a woman. They don't have the America in Japan so I am curious about this. I have ridden an '05 America and felt pretty comfortable on it (I'm at 6'5" with a 36" inseam). I plan on hunting down a carb'd p-twin when I return stateside but I guess that I didn't realize the ergonomics have changed up this much

According to my specs the new model has a 1.2inches lower seat height than my '07
Journalism sucks at times
I read a report that said the America was an "entry level" bike compared to the speedys "Heavier attitude", .Next review the America was voted best in it's class.
they need to fill in enough words to collect their pay I suppose.

I remember reading that they also moved the pegs rearward a bit.

I'd write how I feel about what corporate has done to our beautiful colonial cruisers, but that would violate the AUP. Suffice this emotion to convey my sentiments:

Opinions are like, um, noses. Everyone has one.
And some "motojournalists" may have more than one!

You can't believe everything you read. Always best to try a machine on for size!

Yep, and I could be wrong here, but I think I've also read that they've moved the sidestand a little closer to the rider in order to make deployment of it a little easier for those with shorter legs. Efforts such as these were obviously done to make these bikes a little more user friendly to not only shorter riders but to women, who yes, make up a sizable portion of the "newbie" market.

Add to these issues the idea that our bikes were never "overpowered" to begin with and thus wouldn't or shouldn't "overwhelm" a newbie to the sport of motorcycling, and so yep(and don't shoot the messenger here, fellas), our machines ARE or CAN BE an "Entry-Level" motorcycle, and Triumph is now just taking advantage of this idea.

Exactly, Mike.

And btw, for the very reasons I stated above, AND because ALL of the Bonneville-based model line are such "well rounded" machines that would, should OR could appeal to a wide range of riders, be they "Newbies" or not, THIS is the VERY FREAKIN' REASON I've been sayin' for FREAKIN' YEARS that John Bloor's Boys have been MISSING THE FREAKIN' BOAT when they've FAILED TO OFFER an OPTIONAL BIG-BORE FACTORY-BUILT model Bonneville-based motorcycle that would appeal to those who like the look and many other aspects of the machines and who have BEEN RIDIN' MOTORCYCLES FOR FREAKIN' YEARS and who COULD ULTILIZE THAT EXTRA FREAKIN' POWER to their advantage and WITHOUT "OVERWHELMING" THEIR RIDING ABILITIES!!!!

(...but did those boys ever LISTEN???...nooooooooope!)

Yes they did listen, they just didn't understand what we were saying. Take for example the baby fat boy, err Thunderbird.

Hmmmm...then I wonder if they might've understood a little better if I would've used a little more of those superfluous 'u's in some of my rants???

I agree they are simply trying to expand the market for the America. The entry level Jap cruisers all have similar ergos. I also agree that they missed a big opportunity for a 1200cc Speedmaster. Now that would have an appealing power to weight ratio. It would probably out perform a Tbird, and certainly out- handle that overweight beast. Maybe they chose not to make it because there wasn't enough profit in it.

Yep Richard, it does indeed seem as if Triumph's primary thought while designing and producing these babies was to "build 'em to a certain (low) cost", and they've never deviated from that original course.

And maybe you're right about the "profit margin" aspect here, but I can't tell you how many times over the years I've been in a conversation with experienced riders who have walked up to me after I've parked by BA somewhere and stated somethin' like: "That's a great lookin' motorcycle, and I've thought about purchasing one of these new Bonnevilles, but they just don't have the power I'm lookin' for in a bike! Now, if they had maybe 20 more ponies, THEN I might've been more interested!"

To which I will sometimes reply, "Yeah, I know what you're talkin' about, but you CAN always go with some kind of big-bore kit after you purchase one."

(...to which THEY of course would usually respond back with somethin' like, "Nah, I didn't wanna go through all that kinda hassle!")

We've talked about this on a couple of occaisons before. They SHOULD have made a 1,000 cc + America/Speedmaster option to begin with.As HD did with the 883-1200 sportster.
As Richard has said a 1200cc would be great.

I think a 1000 cc America would be just right for power. Darn shame they'll never consider it. But what to call it? The "Super", the "Grand", ?

the 883 Sportster isn't even all that bad of a bike, but they ruin it with that ridiculously tiny gas tank

Well, it's "above" the "Triumph America", so how about the "Triumph Canada"?

But I also like your idea of the "Grand Master". Highlights the 1,000 and Triumph could do a novelty run of helmets shaped like a Fez with red tassels.

A 1000 or preferably a 1200 cc Speedmaster makes so much sense, and yet Triumph is not even considering it. Which is a crying shame. I have the 7 year itch something fierce. I've been on my America for 7 seasons, I love the bike, but I want to upgrade. I know upgrade is a dirty word to some people here but its a fact of life. People move on.

I rode the Thunderbird and while I love the torque and the top end is nice, it just doesn't have that "gotcha" factor that the America or Speedmaster have. Those bikes pull at me while the new T-bird just doesn't do it. If Triumph had a 1200cc Speedmaster, same frame with just the bigger motor I would be all over it. Hell, I would even be considering a swap into my America frame. But they don't, and instead I'm looking at the heritage softail classic instead because that bike pulls at me as well.

My bikes been paid off for years and I know I should have done the big bore years ago, but family demands took precedent. I am at the point where I no longer want to put a lot of $ into the bike for upgrades, so 2k for a bb doesn't seem realistic any more even as much as I love the bike. But a new 1200cc Triumph, (same frame as the 865) at around 10k would definitely be. C'mon Triumph, help me out!!

Ha ha ... Paul I'm wondering how you are familiar with the Thai word for large? Did it appear in the same sentences as "long time"?

Oh Dear,
I'm reminded that "When I do right,no one remembers.When I do wrong,no one forgets".

Actually she who must be obeyed [my missus] is Thai, and I spend a lot of time there.

That's true Dave, but given the choice I'd take the 1,200 over the 883.
I love my America, but a factory 1000 or 1200 cc would be AWESOME

B.T.W. Richard forgive me for being a dumb dinosaur but what's OT mean? Also what's OEM I know it's the standard Triumph Manufacture.Original Engine Manufacturer?
