I did not read every post since I missed so much but I do think taxing something like Burger King is not the answer. Simply don't eat there and if you do you deserve what you get.I may get a burger there 2 or 3 times a year when I am in a hurry and running late but for the most part I cook my own food. That's right, I actually buy meat and veggies and pasta and so on and cook real non-prepackaged food. The cost of cigarettes I think is more from the lawsuits than taxes but I don't smoke so it doesn't apply to me and so I have not really looked into it. I know at work people who use tobacco pay a substantially higher insurance rate and I feel rightly so as they pose risk of much higher health care costs.I like people not being allowed to smoke in public places, I wish it was not allowed to smoke at the entrances to those places either. I think 100' would be a good buffer. That being said I don't like the gov't telling business owners weather they can have people smoke in their places of business or not.If a business owner wants to allow it they should be able to then the non-smoker has a choice to enter or not.

Gosh Ian, that makes too much sense. Don't look for it to happen anytime soon.

Very reasonable Dogg, I like calling you Dogg, no disrespect. I like neighborhood bars, you meet up with, well your neighbors. But, smoking bands are killing the small neighborhood bar here in KC, their revenues have plunged and many are closing their doors. "Destination" bars, like Sprint Center and the casinos have different rules for smoking, they're connected.

imho what has closed most of the bars are the DUI laws vis-a-vis MADD.

Thing is I don't think anyone can assert that DUI laws are a bad thing. Alcohol clearly impairs one to a point where they endanger others if they get behind the wheel. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have patrons surrender car key when entering a bar and having to pass a breathalizer to get them back upon leaving. If you can't pass then call a friend or a taxi or any other mode of transportation to get home.Would have a lot of mad people but maybe save some lives.

Thank goodness for strict enforcement of DUI laws. That is not to speak to those laws that infringe upon our rights. You see, we do not have a right to drive, which is a privilege bestowed upon us by the government. What is that well worn saying? Think before you drink?

Alas I still long for the days when the officer would take a gander at the vehicles occupants and then ask, "who is the most sober amongst you all?" (that person got to drive home). But then again that was in the days of yute. Back when a sixer would waste me at a cost of $2.12.

I guess this thread could be entitled: Personal Responsibility in the time of gimmie dats.

I remember cops giving you a warning and taking you home, back when they were regular guys not Joe super trooper. Of course back then they didn't have to worry as much that the speeder they just pulled over would shoot them.

Oh, I don't know about that, Jim.

I think a BETTER title might be: "Personal responsibilty in time when TOO many people, REGARDLESS of their political affiliation, have forgetten about their civic responsibities to their fellow citizens and how their own selfish little wants, needs and behavior should sometimes be put on the back burner."

(...yep, that's what I THINK might be better thread title here...though yeah, I DO have to admit it MIGHT be a little freakin' LONG here, huh?!)

Btw, anyone who can't hold his alcohol intake to a reasonable enough level in order for it NOT to draw the attention of a cop while out on the road, SHOULD have the freakin' BOOK thrown at him, for he IS a freakin' IDIOT...period!!!

(...and continues to put WAY too many OTHER peoples' lives in danger....period!)

I agree with you on that one Dwight. Regardless of political affiliation and who you did or didn't vote for I am not saying anything in that respect or implying one choice over the other. I know a guy at work that voted on the thought that doing so would allow him to collect more unemployment while working part time and no other reason at all. When asked about debt or about what effect it may have on his kids he said he didn't care about them or anyone else just that he could still get his check. Talk about selfish. Again I am not advocating one candidate over the other or says one choice is right over another just pointing out his selfish reasoning and the fact that there are too many younger people these days that think like that.

Edited: Easy now. Mentioning of political candidate names is bordering on being hammered.

I support DUI laws, but there is no more just stopping by for a beer. You drink a beer, you wait an hour before driving. They've got the limit so low to throw a wider net.

I couldn't agree with more with this. Living in a democratic society is a balance of personal liberty AND the good of the society as a whole. It seems America has gotten to the point that it fully understands one side of this concept and disregarded the other concept altogether.

No taxes on junk food but please, in the name of God, if you weigh 400lbs don't be bitching about having to pay for 2 tickets on an airline (or train, etc.). If you use 2 seats, pay for 2 seats. Quit going on TV and crying about it.

After reading a thread in which Dwight mentioned junk food and obesity.

WELL.

Here in Australia there are a lot of people asking the government to put a TAX on junk food to try and solve the obesity problem in our young people.

On the radio tonight one of our state politicians stated that the states can't put a TAX on fast food.

It has to be done at a federal level.

I think Federal oversight is needed more here in the United States. More regulations and a bigger Federal workforce to enforce those regulations (to include taxation) is the only method to correct improper adherence to the criteria laid out by the Federal government. If you think about it, we shouldn't allow people to make bad decisions. We should nudge them in the right direction. This will of course require more secure infrastructure to include cameras, checkpoints and curfews. So many other good policies could be put in place to watch to populace and fine bad behavior. I am truly excited by the upcoming years of policy in our government. I have faith that they will do the right thing. They are our best and brightest of course!
