After reading a thread in which Dwight mentioned junk food and obesity.
WELL.
Here in Australia there are a lot of people asking the government to put a TAX on junk food to try and solve the obesity problem in our young people.
On the radio tonight one of our state politicians stated that the states can't put a TAX on fast food.
It has to be done at a federal level.

No more taxes! No more trying to control people's freedom of personal choice! Everyone knows about health and eating properly, we all learned about it when we were kids. It's a matter of making that choice. It's none of the government's d*mn business what I eat, how I eat or where I eat. That whole thing is just another excuse for the government to steal more of our money. Don't they already take enough?!?!?!?!

It's funny that politicians want to reduce smoking through higher taxes on tobacco and reduce the consumption of fast food through higher taxes on it, but then claim that raising the taxes on economic activity will increase prosperity.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I think the only motorcycle brand that should ever be bought or ridden is a Triumph. So, I suggest that the government add an additional tax to all motorcycles that are not Triumphs. And double that tax for people buying Harley Davidsons. Sucks to limit personal freedom of choice doesn't it!

If you want to help control obesity. Just stop buying the damn junk food no matter the price or tax on it. Eat your F'N veggies, fruits and lean meats. Do some REAL work and exersize. Get outside and play with your kids or grandkids, play some sports, go for a hike, ride a bike. Lead by example and set the guideslines for our youth, I didn't eat all that crap as a kid and neither does my son now. Sure he gets some candy, cake and ice cream eveynow and then but not junk eveyday. He won't even touch soda. Best thing I can say is get off yer a$$ and stop putting that crap in your face.

Taxes are NEVER EVER about the good of the people. Taxes are about money, power and control. The more money the government steals from you, the less freedom you have to do what you want and the more reliant on the government people become.

Couldn't agree more with your thoughts here, Matt.
I'll just add that with all the talk of "personal responsibility" here, I also agree with those here who say there's little reason for governments to raise taxes on junk food.
Yep, it's a matter of personal responsibilty, alright.
And so, all you FAT, OUT O' SHAPE, LARD ASSES OUT THERE WHO HAVE CHILDREN WHO LOOK TO YOU TO BE ROLE MODELS, AND WHO APPARENTLY THINK THAT SOMEHOW CARING ABOUT YOUR HEALTH AND APPERANCE ISN'T ALL THAT IMPORTANT, WISE THE F**K UP AND START TEACHING YOUR LITTLE FREAKIN' RUGRATS BY EXAMBLE THAT IT IS IMPORTANT, NOT ONLY FOR THEIR SAKE AND YOUR SAKE, BUT FOR OUR COUNTRY'S FINANCIAL HEALTH TOO. 'CAUSE YOUR FAT, OUT O' SHAPE LARD ASSES COST THIS COUNTRY BILLIONS OF DOLLAR IN HEALTH CARE COSTS ANNUALLY!!!
(...and besides the fact that the way you look make Americans look like fat, dumb, overly self-indulgent slobs to the REST of the freakin' world!!!!)

hmm, i think some of that is a bit harsh. I don't agree with the tax's , heck its like smoking, people are gonna pay regardless if they want the stuff so tax's are not going to do anything but fill the pockets of the feds. I have a larger daughter and she does not eat all that crap and both her mom and i are not heavy and we do allot of other stuff, some people are just genetically indisposed to being a bit larger, you can be large and still be very healthy.

Well Mike, I'll grant you there ARE exceptions to my "little rule" here, as certainly there are people who are physically predisposed to being a LITTLE heavier than others...BUT...like I said here, there are WAY too many freakin' Americans(and I'll bet Canadians too) who DON'T have a freakin' CLUE when to PUSH their lard asses away from the freakin' dinner table, OR from the table at freakin' McDonalds!!!
Once again, it's mostly JUST a matter of PORTION SIZES and judging who much "fuel" your body is going to burn on any given day depending upon your activity level.
I mean, HOW freakin' hard is THAT to take some "personal responsibilty" for and figure the f**k out, HUH???!!!
OH! And btw, re all the taxes and governmental intrusion into the tobacco industry...I hope EVERYBODY here realizes that all this "governmental intrusion" into THIS issue the last few decades HAS decreased the number of kids AND adults who partake of THAT habit.
(...of course, with nicotine being a known appetite suppressant and with less Americans smoking than in the past, maybe THIS is the reason why Americans are gettin' SO MUCH MORE freakin' FAT nowadays, EH?!)

Hmmm...I'm gettin' the distinct impression that you're NOW talkin' about somethin' other than "food" here, ol' buddy! (...btw, I'm now wonderin' why you Brits don't spell portion like this: "pourtion"???...I mean, you guys throw that superfluous "u" in so many OTHER words, so why not HERE???)

Just want to add a few lines here for some clarification. 1st I'm not a health nut or fitness freak. I don't always eat great all the time. I like a few cold bears now and then and I like whisky & whiskey. I might even smoke a good cigar occasionally. Not really fond of chips or soda's and I HATE McDonalds. I don't run that often or exercise as much as I used to, so I have a few extra puonds. Last annual check up all lab results were great and physical was good to go. BTW I very rarley get sick, practically never. No cough, cold, flu, ear infection, nothing. (NEVER GET A FLU SHOT).
So what I'm saying it's ok to endulged sometimes and slack off a little. Enjoy life and relax. Just don't make a breafast of twinkies and Mt. dew, lunch of Doritos and McNasty for dinner. Learn to cook, have an apple, do some push ups and lear to push away (from the table).
AND DON'T STRESS THE STUFF YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER!

Once again Matt, I couldn't agree more with ya here. Yep, as my Pop used to tell me(though I'm pretty sure he stole the idea from some long dead Greek philosopher )..."Moderation in all things"! (...funny though, the ONLY thing I CAN'T seem to "moderate" is the number and often the tenor of my postings I have here at BA.com, huh!)

Knowledge is power. No politics here, just a simple axiom. For example, McDonald's has not one thing on their menu that is free of Trans Fats. Know what it is one eats and the world can be full of those sometime indulgences. When is the last time you enjoyed cheese? Yeah, I used to wolf it down, but now, with the knowledge my Doc barked at me, I realize that small wedges, allowed to dissolve on one's palate is, again, one of those simple sometime indulgences. Yep, for a time anything and everything in any order or time of day etc, worked for me. Then I went through male menopause...

You can whine and cry about the ONLY solution to this problem is for a person to stop choking down a Big Mac at McDonalds and we will realign within the universe and all will be well. Frankly that is a bunch of crap as the problem is at a much larger scale than that now as doctors are seeing certain types of diabetes that have never been seen before with children and it is due to obesity. You cry about a tax that won't even affect you if everyone here is on the Richard Simmons model of exercising and eating about the fundamental violation of freedom. I don't smoke so last time I checked, I don't pay into big tobacco either by not buying their product or the taxes on their product so it is not exactly any money out of my pocket. Same scenario with something coming from Burger Slime. I don't know if the taxes would work but something needs to be done about it or else ALL of us will be paying for this dilemma down the not-so-distant road as the problem is at an epidemic level now. Whether the costs will reflect through healthcare as rates will reflect regardless because of this magnitude or coffin makers are going to be charging more because of the amount of material needing to be used...this isn't a problem that isn't going away even if we want to stick our heads in the sand and proclaim that you are not the one shoving the crap down your throat. Tax the crap out of the garbage....who cares....I don't buy or eat that garbage and if it curbs just a small percent, then that is a huge number that prevented the hogs to feed at the troff. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/22...1_United_Stateshttp://articles.nydailynews.com/2012-06-...ion-researchershttp://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/health/101118/fat-and-fatter-worlds-10-fattest-countries

Some good thoughts there too, Matt. Yep, it ALWAYS cracks me up when the same people who b*tch and moan and cry about "that bad ol' gov'ment"(like that freakin' MORON here in Arizona, and I hear as a few other morons in other parts of the country are doin', who I saw last night on my TV during the local Phoenix news broadcast and who was flyin' Old Glory upside-down because of how this latest election turned out, AND who was SUCH a freakin' scared f**k that he didn't want the news cameras to show his face, and so they ONLY showed his FAT freakin' BEER BELLY on camera while the reporter was asking him why he was disrespecting the flag AND our election process that way....ah, but I diagress), are OFTEN the very SAME freakin' people who don't EVEN take a little "personal responsibility" for their OWN freakin' bodies and GET IN SHAPE!!! (...man, that fat-assed beer belly-totin' moron really hit a nerve with me last night, alright...saaaay, ya think THAT might be the reason I'm so freakin' fired up today???)

I'm not going to climb upon my soap box on this one even though it royally pisses me off. We just had a memorial service for a troop last week over here...a 22 year old kid that was serving to bring the vote to a part of the world that he probably never even heard of growing up in a far away land. And now I read about these fook-tards that fly the flag upside down just because they do not like who won the election. I am not bringing politics into this...it doesn't matter who won the election in this same scenario! Performing that act is disgraceful! Flying a flag upside is a bonafide manner to signal distress. The choice of the people choosing their representative in an election, regardless if you like the outcome or not, is NOT a sign of distress!! I find that person as un-American as some of the people I have met on deployments with my boots in the sand. Shame on him.

I can't wait to get my America and treat myself to the present 20 years in the making...and this is to ride the country I have served for 22 years. I plan on having a chili dog with onions as an appetizer and then washing it down with a bacon double cheeseburger with extra cheese and extra bacon as I sit my fat butt down on the ground and eat it while looking at God-inspiring landscapes like this which our country has to offer. And I will gladly pay my fat-butt tax too!!

No taxes on junk food but please, in the name of God, if you weigh 400lbs don't be bitching about having to pay for 2 tickets on an airline (or train, etc.). If you use 2 seats, pay for 2 seats. Quit going on TV and crying about it.
If I go to the store and pick up 2 loaves of bread, I'll pay for 2 loaves of bread.
If you take twice as much and you have to pay for it, it's not discrimination. It's fair and reasonable.

Well HD did try that at one time. Certain members of the Govt who wanted to save the only american motorcycle company thought they could limit the CC's on on inports to 700. here is the rest of the story... http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa032.htmlWhat this does not say is that the U.S. Surpream Court overturned this law.

The people that own the majority of the shares in the companies that promote over eating and consumption could not give a flying fig about anyone but themselves. They just care about the $$$ (along with pension funds that own huge stakes in these companies) and as many have bought into the get rich dream those same people refuse to vote in laws that will protect them and their friends/relatives because maybe someday they will be rich and have to pay for the poor slob that they are now. Sorry folks the dream is selfish and very self orientated, you will probably not become rich and will need the help of society. Hopefully Mr. McCarthy really is dead although some people of a certain political persuasion in US would love him to come back to life.

First, not sure how bringing up a long dead, fat, alcoholic and over zealous cold warrior from the 50's has to do with the obesity problem. Second, most investors aren't evil, they are self interested. One might even argue they are the most responsible members of society, they are saving for their futures, both as individuals and pension funds, while at the same time financing the possibility economic growth and employment for others. Thirdly, much of the "fast food" obesity problem is an effect of both parents working in the modern economy. It has always amazed me how much "fast food" my sisters' kids eat, both parents work. All my sisters cook very well, but who has time. Compare that to our childhood, mom was home, we took our lunches to school, dinner was at 6:00PM every night, you could set your watch by it. Guess my sisters could cook healthy meals and send their kids to bed at ten o'clock five minute after they've eaten. Lastly, we know obesity when we see it, but the statistics are skewed. Take the Body Mass Index, both athletes and the obese show up obese. Everyone old enough to remember the President's Council on Fitness from school, I think JFK started it, everyone in gym class was obese according to BMI. I'm with Soren on this, why add one more penalty on folks already struggling. Besides we already screwed the poor by destroying affordable use cars with "cash for clunkers".

First, not sure how bringing up a long dead, fat, alcoholic and over zealous cold warrior from the 50's has to do with the obesity problem.
Yeah, good point here, Mac. Why would our Canadian friend up there bring up the subject of "Tail Gunner" Joe when there are so many OTHER present day examples like that old blowhard he could have brought up, huh?!
Uh huh, like say maybe a certain fat-assed overly-zealous RADIO personality who ALSO seems to have a problem with not only HIS weight but his consumption of drugs!

Okay, now that I've got THAT little zinger out, I WILL say I DO agree with many of your points here.
But hey, when I was a kid back in the late '50s and early '60s, BOTH my parents worked and WE still had dinner at our table almost every freakin' night...so sorry, this excuse that parents seem to be using today about "oh, how hard it is to raise kids today", just isn't gonna wash with me here...sorry.
(...yep, sorry, but I'M thinkin' it boils down more to the fact that UNLIKE when WE were kids and parents stayed together to raise their little freakin' rugrats, HALF the freakin' parents today are DIVORCED, and so the kids come in SECOND half the time on their list of "time priorities"!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

We resemble our dads, but we're not them. Our sisters aren't our mothers either. The times they (have) are changin. I guess that's what confused me about the reference, Canada? But FYI, obviously the dead guy isn't fat or an alcoholic anymore, he's dead. The live blowhard lost a lot of lbs and married a hottie, now he's addicted to golf and sex. I share his addiction to sex, but at my age and income level the hotties are hard to come by. Well except for the hourly ones, not my cup of tea.
