I put some 19" turn-outs on my 2007BA. It rocks, but I have some good backfire going on when I change gears. I am wondering if any of you know about how much it will cost to have a mechanic calculate and re-jet my carbs or whatever is needed to fix this for me. I am noob enough to not want to do it myself and be stranded on a ride if I f it up.

Thats apparently a tough question for the fellas here! the thing is that it really is an easy job and most of us have done that ourselves as its not usually a one and done operation. As far as time goes,a competent tech should be able to do a rejet and carb balance in far less then 2 hrs. shop rate is usually between 60 and 80 bucks and parts are under 20 bucks. Here is a jetting calculator to make it easier.

what else has been done to the bike? Pods? AI removal, air box removal? are those pipes straight flow through or baffled? the calculator should get you close, you should be able to re-jet your bike in a couple hours or less (first time) not a bad idea to have it put on a dyno though.

The only mods other than cosmetic are to the pipes. I removed the stock (de-baffled) pipes and put on the 19" Emgos which have some baffling in them. I'll look at the links, and I do appreciate the advice. I am just a little sheepish about tearing it apart to remove the carb. And then since it is out, I should do the AI removal....buy a woman a new dress and she'll want shoes to match.

It comes down to lacking the confidence to tear it out, open it up and do something I've never tried to something I love so much. I suppose if I mess it up, I can take it to a mechanic then.

Probably be around $150-250 including the cost of the jets. A few hours he will charge to jet it and balance it.

Is this mechanic going to run it on a dyno to jet it correctly? That would cost more but would be the best way.

Not sure about US but in Canada to swap out the jets and put her on a dyno for a couple runs etc would run a guy about 350 bucks or so.

Get a manual and read, read and read it again. When you are relaxed and confident go after it,look at the way things go,take pix with you phone how cables and wiring goes.Altho it's obvious when it comes time to reassemble.Use the right tool for the job, remain calm and observant, keep you eyes open for the small parts that will jump out at you then hide under the bench.Use the calculator on here.IF all fails I 'll sell you a set of stock carbs. good luck.

Thanks Marty (and all,) upon your advice I have ordered the Haynes DIY repair manual. I also watched a few gear head shows on cable over the weekend and am more confident that I can do something this easy to a carbed bike. Might be calling for those extra carbs if I fubar the ones I have.

One thing to watch is be sure you have a screwdriver that fits the pilot well and is fully and squarely engaged with the jet before turning. They can be tight sometimes and are only made of brass.

first time i changed jets on a bike i was scared silly! was a hyosung GV 650 pretty much a suzuki if you know the motors. I was tense for hours before giving it a go, finally did and was amazed as to how easy it actually was. Marty had good advice, i like Marty...... I like Marty's help LOL

I was able to change the jets and remove the needle shims on my 05 America with out removing the carbs. Just needed a 90 degree ratcheting screwdriver from gradnpa's old tool box =)

K&N Pods, Jetted, AI removed, and Cocktail Shakers. She ran great at sea level, but now that I'm at 3k' she has a wicked Decel Pop...music to my ears...

All other things equal, the bike should run a tad richer at 3000' than it did at sea level.

A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice. Pat
