There are numerous practical reasons to have the cap vertical, few if any, to have it horizontal.

Aerodynamics notwithstanding, the motorsickles overall lines remain zen.

Well Jim, as you know, with me being one to seldom if ever disagree with the majority opinion about things(yeah, sure ), sorry here BUT because years ago I applied one of these niffy little oval 3-D Triumph logos on my gas cap(btw...what's with this whole "petro" thing here, dude?...you're a good ol' 'Merican boy, ain't ya?!...WE call 'em "GAS caps" 'round here, ya know...what?!...are ya gonna now start throwin' in that there superfluous letter "u" into words now TOO?!...ah, but I digress ), MY petro...ahem, GAS cap is horizontal, as you can see by this here picture... (...I mean, it would look pretty darn dumb goin' in a vertical fashion, now that I've got that there nifty little Triumph badge on it, RIGHT?!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Yep, Dave. Gotta agree with ya here. Before I applied that "nifty little badge" on it, I would always turn my petr...errr...GAS cap in a vertical manner too. Yep, funny thing though, it seems since I've done this my maximum attainable speed AND my mileage has dropped about .03 percentage points! (...not as "aerodynamic" this way, ya see...oh the price we sometimes pay to festoon "cool lookin' stuff" on our bikes, EH?!)

if this is a subtle reference to today's vote I guess I would have voted independent. Mine stays diagonal.

Hey Brent! Isn't that the same sorta symbol they're puttin' in the books next to Barry Bonds' home run record now??? Oh...wait...that's not a asterisk, is it. Never mind. (...sorry, couldn't resist...don't mind me here...I think it looks great...NOT as great as that nifty little oval Triumph doo-dad I put on MINE of course, BUT great just the same ...and I like the paint on the console too...nice job)

I was SHOCKED to see ANYBODY would say horizontal! NOW, ONLY Dwight has an excuse! (Though I question whether or not he just photoshopped that for controversy. )

Nope, not photoshopped, erle. (...and besides, I try to ALWAYS steer clear of "controversy", ya know...it's not good for my heart at this late stage of my life)

That's one sweet looking petrol cap ya got there Dwight. But ya see, my comment had to do with aerodynamics and the drag of a horizontal cap slowing the bike down. And, if there are two things I have learned about our bikes since being on this site it is that the black ones go the fastest and the red ones look the best. So, you see, it is quite obvious that you are more into aesthetics than speed.

Any which way but loose. Besides if I am concentrating on the cap I might miss some beautiful sights that are out and about.

Ah, but Jim, what you've apparently overlooked in that photo is that OTHER nifty little addition I added years ago to my console...that Union Jack/Old Glory used-to-be badge-pin that I cut the pin off of in the back and glued to my console. Ya see, the way those flags sorta splay out actually helps the airstream flow AROUND my horizontally turned gas cap, and thus as I mentioned earlier my drag-coefficient has ONLY increased some .03 percentage, where as of course WITHOUT it my gas cap WOULD most likely be as aerodynamic as the proverbial barn door!

It's nice to see Dwight is still a slave to fashion. For those of us that tend towards the austere . . . vertical. Like my engine and, hopefully, my bike!
I would be unstoppable if not for law enforcement and physics.

Unfortunately, it was a failed experiment. I had wanted to get an anodized red look. It was some paint that was supposed to stick to chrome, but didn't stand up to drips of gas. It came off with some elbow grease and goo gone. oh well.

To be honest, I twist it untill it clicks 3 or 4 times to be sure it's seated and leave it there.
