I've had riding buddies give me a bad time over the years because I'm usually the last guy ready to go because I'm one of those ATGATT types. My response was always "I don't dress for the ride, I dress for the slide" Well, "the slide" happened Saturday when the road edge crumbled out from under the front wheel (I was on the KLR), and I face planted with my left leg pinned under the engine. I ended up with a broken left fibula, BUT, the leather reinforced jeans worked, the armored gloves worked, the armored(should that be armoured? )jacket worked, without the mid-calf armored boots my ankle would have been broken as well. But, the full face helmet saved my ass. Looking at the helmet damage, they would still be picking out rocks and wiring the left side of my face back together. So, all you freedom of choice and wind in the hair types are welcome to it. As I sit here with my leg propped up in the rosy glow of the Vicodan , reflecting on what happened and what would have happened, I know what the smart choice is. (The best part of the incident was the couple in the truck the drove past me sitting in the road with a bike wadded into fence without stopping or even slowing up.

Glad to hear you're OK. The gear IS all the difference in many crash outcomes. Heal up and I hope you're back in the saddle again soon.

Better waiting for you to get yer gear on than sitting in the waiting room at the hospital. Sorry to hear about your mishap but glad to hear the gear saved you a lot of grief. Heal well and fast, and thanks for plugging the wonders of protective gear. We all have something to learn from your encounter.
Live to love, love to live.

Hey Mike, glad you're not more seriously injured. I had to go look up which bone the fibula was... at least I knew it was in the leg Hope you heal up quick and get back out on it!

thank you for the reinforcement....I get the "looks" when I'm gearing up too. It's good to be reminded why I do it. Heal quickly. I'm glad you're mostly okay.

But...but MIKE! You DO realize that riders who ride withOUT any gear(especially without a helmet) always "LOOK" soooooo much more "cool", "tough" and "rugged", don't YA???!!! AND my ol' friend, you DO realize that THOSE are always THE most "important" things to consider whenever you throw a leg over a motorcycle, don't YA???!!! Yep, ya just GOTTA look "cool", "tough" and "rugged" out there over any OTHER considerations, ya know!!! Yep Mike! It's like Fernando here always said... "It's NOT how you FEEL(after a spill), it's how you LOOK(before the spill)! And you (have to) look MARVELOUS!" (...as I mentioned over the phone to ya yesterday, glad you're in pretty good shape ol' buddy, all things considered...and yep, THANKS of course in LARGE part to the gear you were wearin'!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Hey Mike, sorry to hear of your recent dilemma, it's good that your kit worked and that you had minimal damage considering and you sound in good spirits considering you've just had an "off" and that's even more good news but more importantly..................hows the bike???
I'd rather ride it than clean it!!!!

Your argument seems predicated on your assumption that people who choose to ride without ATGATT do so simply to 'look cool'.
Do we really want to go there again.

Well, OF COURSE I don't, Jim! And MAINLY 'cause EVERYBODY "knows" all the "cool", "tough" and "rugged" lookin' riders NEVER get into any accidents whenever THEY throw their freakin' leg over a motorcycle and give her the gas! Uh huh. Well, I suppose the OTHER reasons why all the "cool", "tough" AND "rugged" lookin' riders out there don't wear gear might be 'cause all that stuff might CHAFE their "rugged" little bodies, huh! OR, that SOMEHOW they feel it's all about "FREEEEEEDOM"!!!! (...yeah, THAT'S it, it's that whole "Freedom" thing, AIN'T it?!...well, in THAT case, why don't they ride freakin' NUDE then, HUH???!!!)

OH, and one MORE thing here, Jim. IF it IS actually about all that misplaced idea about "freedom", THEN I HOPE to God that the powers-that-be NEVER mandate riding gear(INCLUDING them there "brain buckets"), 'cause then THAT would take away ALL this "fun" I've always had about sarcastically kiddin' riders out there who evidently believe they'll NEVER have a freakin' accident while their ridin' their motorsickle.
(...yep, 'cause ya see, I've ridden over 45 freakin' YEARS on these things, and after one o' them there brain buckets saved MY noggin from some SERIOUS injury about 18 years ago, I KNOW for a freakin' FACT that riding gear WORKS...well, at least it "works" MUCH better than NO freakin' gear at ALL!!!!!)

OH! And one MORE thing here, Jim! IF you mistakenly believe that I somehow lack the "courage" to say all the stuff I've just said to riders IN PERSON to 'em and just say this kind of stuff over this freakin' Internet, you're sadly mistaken AGAIN!!!
'Cause I say this same stuff IN PERSON to a whole lot of riders out there TOO!!!
(...yep, "shy" I'm NOT...as you MAY have discerned after all this time around here at BA.com!!!)

Wishing you a speedy recovery, and thanks for reminding us of why we dress for the ride. AmyLee and I, invested in new full face helmets this past summer, used them for Cambria and Reno events. Besides, full face helmets are better at keeping the rain out.

I've never said or thought anything of the sort.
I just hope that if the powers that be decide to look at what safety equipment is needed to protect us from our own foolishness that someone doesn't realize that eliminating motorcycles is even safer than mandating safety equipment.
Oh, and before we get to personal here, I always wear a full helmet and jeans. I also wear a riding jacket and boots 99% of the time. My argument isn't with the gear so much as the self riotous who like to preach, especially when they themselves throw a leg over rather than riding in a cage. Riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous. We each balance our enjoyment with that danger every time we ride.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Jim (and Dwight) I'm not the type to stir the pot , so it was never my intent to get "The Discussion" fired up again (Okay, so maybe it was ,a little ). I agree, the less mandates, the better. The choice should remain up to the individual. My point is that, you never know which ride is going to end up like my most recent one. ATGATT is a pain in the ass sometimes, but you NEVER know. I was doing less than 15mph when I went down and I'm ,here today chatting with you guys If I'd been doing the sneakers and baseball cap thing I'd be up in St. Marys dealing with disfiguring and possibly debilitating injuries. 15MPH GUYS! So I'm not saying you shouldn't have a a choice, just think hard about it when you make the choice. OK, I'm done and by the way guys, thanks for all the good wishes.

fibula is a tough bone to break. But it would have been tough for you to ride home if it had been your tibia. At least that much was good. Get well,
What type of armored boots and pant do you have. Also what gloves. Looking for all three. DOn't mean to change this to a best gear thread

AMEN BROTHER !
If one had been surrounded within a cage, probably NONE of the injuries would have occurred.
For REAL safety, DON'T DRIVE! Everything else is a probability, from 1 to 10, YOU pick the number (and YOUR comfort zone)

p.s. GLAD your ok.

I come from a culture that will take away your bike license for a year if you so much as not wear your reflective vest...day or night time! Trust me...it doesn't solve shiite and at the end of the day it is just more regulation to shove down peoples throats that will never be fully implemented. Choose your own level or risk you are comfortable with and be ready to accept your decision if something should happen. If you want to hear good preaching...then go to church on Sunday. Now I am going to go for a ride but first I am mandated to put on the mountain of gear or I will be taken away in cuffs and loose my license for a year.

First thing, (should have said this sooner) glad your injuries were not more severe.
Second, I am not against someone trying to convince others of the benefit of gear. I draw the line at ridiculing someone disagreeing with you.
Besides, its fun to poke Dwight once in a while. Helps him keep his post count up.
