replacing head gaskets used to be such a simple task, now they load the top of the engine up with a bunch of useless crap that adds about 6 more hours to the job
Sure was, I drove to Tenn. once and did head gaskets on a Chevy small block in a pick up. I drove straight through to the Howard Johnsons 100 miles west of Knoxville, did the job in the parking lot, and drove home without sleep. The drive home is a very long and very funny story too. The truck was being driven home by my friends Uncle from Louisiana towing an old phone company van. We bought these at auction for our framing business. I ended up driving the van home since the rest of the guys wanted to sleep. Truck blew the gaskets again 1/2 way from there home. Turned out the block wasn't flat, had to replace it with a short block. That isn't the afore mentioned story.
EDIT: The van turned out to be a great buy, the truck was pretty and van ugly but that van never gave us a problem and was set up to run gas or propane. It was used within the city limits and had 60,000 rough miles on it. Sold it still running great years later. Only problem was the shift linkage for the 3 on the tree shift wore out and I slapped a cheap floor shift in it.
