You don't ham it up for the camera on a freakin curve. The bird is heavy to begin with and if you don't pay attention it will get away from you. I've over shot curves many times and I WAS paying attention.
When I saw the crash pics, I didn't say these words, but I was certainly thinking them! 
Regarding the T-Bird rider with a sprained wrist... 5 years ago we had a crash with a left-turning driver. My wife & I both flew through the air. Me for about 15 feet and my wife for over 20 feet. She suffered a broken hand and a shattered collar bone. I walked away with a very serious bruise on my right hip. I probably missed a broken hip by very little. 
My point is that sometimes you get VERY VERY lucky in a crash and you learn something. Let's hope this guy learns a valuable lesson.
