Target fixation, and most likely cruising along in the wrong gear. Boys, keep the rpm’s high and stay in a low gear when tackling the twisties. I do hope the gentlemen was ok.

wow, between the 9th and 11th frame he stands the bike upright rather than pushing down into the turn. It looks like he knew he blew the turn and just gave up and went bad from there.
hopefully not too seriously hurt. wasted a nice looking bike as well.

Looks like he panic braked which stood the bike up instead of laying it further over and letting the sparks fly in the tight turn. I bet the sports car driver was pissed. $12000 bike vs $60000 car. The impact doesn't seem to be high speed because the rider and bike don't travel very far.

I wonder if the ride past was set up for the photographer and it went horribly wrong. I feel sorry for the rider. I would be so embarrassed.

I'm thinking he just wasn't ready for the corner. There he was waving at the camera and not even looking at the road just as he entered a tight corner. There's a lot to assess, and a whole lot of concentration required to successfully negotiate high speed corners. The moral perhaps? No waving... stay focused!

Agreed Mike. I'm seeing target fixation preceded by trying to straighten up after dragging too deep on the right side.

This stretch of US Highway 129 is known as “The Dragon” and can be quite challenging to even the experienced rider.
Along with the weekend riders and sports cars several photographers set up along the roadway snapping photos and posting on line for purchase. As we see here the rider was paying more attention to the camera guy for that perfect shot and not the road conditions.
I believe if he was in 2nd-3rd gear and did not panic he could have throttled through the corner and possibly pulled out of it.
For the most part your bike will go where your eyes are looking. Focus on where you need the bike to go.

Besides all the excellent observations for this crash offered up in this thread so far, such as his lack of concentration, target fixation and perhaps his gear selection, I can NEVER emphasize the following enough...the whole problem here started with the rider taking the wrong line as he entered into the curve. The rider should have been hugging the centerline of the road as he approached the curve and then as he reached the apex of it he would have had more his side of the road in order to complete his turn.

Once again, always practice your "late apexing" tactics whenever you're in the twisties, folks!

(...because EVERYTIME a rider "goes wide" it's because they've "early apexed" into a curve!)

Not a bad suggestion here Kevin, but I have to admit I often wave at the photographers stationed along the twisties here on Arizona's scenic Hwy 89A.

(...but then again, because as I mentioned above I ALWAYS late apex into turns, I NEVER go wide...EVEN with ONLY one freakin' hand on my handbars!!!)

But there was a steering breakdown. A loose nut behind the bars. We can only hope that airborne shot was after his legs "missed" the bars. If not he is really hurt.

I hope he recovers well.

Looks like a lack of knowledge and practice of counter steering. He wanted to go right, he steered to the right and went left, right into the vette.


We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

The first shot after impact shows him already rotated 270 degrees - he's on his back facing the sky. I suspect his legs hit the bars and then the impact the road first too.

I think he may have been able to avoid that vette had he not stood the bike up. Especially since the vette driver was also swerving away.

I noticed what appears to be a "PCH" sticker on the back trunk. Does that mean he's from California or had he just been passing through? If he had ridden the Pacific Coast Highway he would of had plenty of practice for all those Dragon twisties.

Yep Dave. Gotta admit I was thinkin' the very same thing earlier myself.

I'm recovering from a similar type of wreck on july 25th. I was on my way home from work and was only 1-1/2 miles from home. a 325i BMW came around a Left hand bend, he was 3 feet on my side and he hit a toyota 4 runner head on ( driver to driver anyway) they bounced apart about 8 feet and i came around the corner and laid the bike down. broken R elbow, L wrist, concussion and lotsa bruising. had to be lifeflighted to hospital ($28,000) for the ride and i didn't even get to watch. I may never straighten my right arm completely and have lost almost all my grip in my right hand. my bike is repairable as it only laid down ($5200 to fix it). my riding days are over ( i'm 57 yrs old) and she will be for sale when she comes home from the dealers. 2009 Speedmaster. Almost kinda deja-vu and I'm not putting my family through this episode again, Des

September 27th a car stopped hard on the interstate for little to no reason. Like Friar John my son washed out the bike while stopping went down at about 60MPH. Compound fracture right arm broken left wrist, broken left elbow, 3 broken ribs, 2 facial bones broken and a traumatic brain injury. The brain injury is still keeping him out of work.

You are correct, this stuff is life altering. I was 30' behind him on my bike and still dream it every night. It makes it all much more serious when you see it or live it.

I read on another forum the guy with the vette posted. The Thunderbird rider got a sprained wrist. Thats incredible.

The Vette was a 2001 so probably totalled according to his post.

You don't ham it up for the camera on a freakin curve. The bird is heavy to begin with and if you don't pay attention it will get away from you. I've over shot curves many times and I WAS paying attention.

A good push on the right handlebar would have taken care of the problem. He had the time and the space but didn't do the right thing. It's as if he saw the vette and then drove right into it (he probably did). The proper response needs to be practiced until it's automatic, almost muscle memory. He obviously was thinking about what to do rather than doing it. Counter steer is counter intuitive, it needs to be practiced until it is done without thinking. I once rode a Honda 350 into a farm field at over 50 MPH by turning the handlebars one way and the bike going the other. Think, practice, think, practice as if your life depends upon it, because it does.

When I saw the crash pics, I didn't say these words, but I was certainly thinking them!

Regarding the T-Bird rider with a sprained wrist... 5 years ago we had a crash with a left-turning driver. My wife & I both flew through the air. Me for about 15 feet and my wife for over 20 feet. She suffered a broken hand and a shattered collar bone. I walked away with a very serious bruise on my right hip. I probably missed a broken hip by very little.


My point is that sometimes you get VERY VERY lucky in a crash and you learn something. Let's hope this guy learns a valuable lesson.
