Well Mike, JUST as long as those fellas in Bavaria don't decide to name this bike a "Speed Twin", I suppose everything is cool here.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I was in a BMW motorcycle dealership last week and I asked about this bike and the owner told me that they were'nt importing them for 2013. A sport bike doesn't interest me but the naked, more standard bikes do hold some appeal still.
A Harley Heritage, a Triumph America, a good Irish Whiskey and cigar. As close to Heaven on earth as I can get.

27 more HP than us with the same displacement and nearly a linear torque line.
why don't we have that motor? Pretty ugly bike to me but I love its ability to make power.

Very true, Thanassis, however remember my little joke up there about BMW calling this bike a "Speed Twin"? Well, I think that's pretty much what Ron was alluding to here. I mean, at present Triumph's only Twins are air-cooled and all of their liquid-cooled machines are Triples.
And so the question would be: Why didn't Triumph beat the German boys to the punch with a Speed Triple-esque parallel Twin? I mean, what is more "English" than a parallel Twin?
(...yeah, I know and you know the answer...Triumph is a much smaller concern than is BMW, and so there wasn't enough money for them to do this...though I think we all know that one IS probably in the works right now, because as has been stated many many times around here and elsewhere, the days of the air-cooled motorcycle engine are fast approaching their end)

The Thunderbird is a liquid cooled twin and I once had a liquid cooled Trophy four banger.

DOH!!! You're absolutely right of course, Keith. I done completely forgot about the T-Bird, didn't I! (...but in my defense I was thinkin' along the lines of a naked sportbike kind o' thing, not a cruiser)

That 800 BMW redlines at 8500 so unlike our 675 that won a shootout with its cousin and the Ducati 18 months ago it does not rev to 12+k to make power. Even with Procom pushing us to 8k we are not at 87HP. The liquid makes the constant temps so sustained high revs don't do damage but I think Triumph has the technology to put some more ponies in the 865s if they wanted to do it.
Call it a Speedmaster SE and charge another grand for it because of head work and cams. I bet they would sell.
Look at the number of folks we have pouring money into horses after the purchase.

I think Dwight meant that only twins with fins are air cooled.
