just make sure it is a 2 part acrylic clear coat, if you are doing bags make sure to use that stuff, should be about 25 bucks a can and only good for 24 hours once you pop the bottom of it, but it would be the only stuff i would use. Dam i have a can in the car i just bought today! LOL can't remember the name, if i go our later i will get it to ya.

Thanks. Putting it on these bags after I paint them black. I have done some google searches but will modify my search. Not sure if they wouldn't look good flat black or not.

Thanks. Got them here in the classifieds. Started painting. This is flat black but might try satin. Mike B. Would putting clear coat on matte black or satin black make them more like gloss black or does the stuff you recommended in satin black give it a fairly protected finish?

it will def make it look more wet if that makes sense but you really want to clear it anyways as far as i am concerned, helps protect the paint, easier to wash, bugs and stuff and then you can also polish it nice like the rest of the bike. Make sure you are happy with the finish on your paint, then use the 2 part clear, about 3 coats with a good ten minute flash time between coats, when you come out to do another coat you will see how it gets a bit deeper in look, and you can decide. 1 like 3 coats. Easy coasts though, about 7-8" spray distance, start the spray before the bags and sweep through stopping way after the bag is sprayed etc etc etc, you could even wet sand with a 600 or 800 between coats but i never do. Looks good though man, nice bags.

K2 is the GOOD STUFF! (in the can, NOT the pouch ) I just used regular ol' Dupli-color paint in rattle cans from Autozone, and you saw it up close last spring. BUT, I KNOW that if even a DROP of fuel does manage to get on it, I'll have compounding to do! So NEXT time, I'll coat it with K2!
And you may see me tonight

I am having a real tough time getting an even looking undercoat before the clear. Thought I prepped it well enough. Think I will be sanding a lot off. Waiting for this last coat to dry then I might just say screw it and start over

Mike. If this is the case, I need to find some. I have given up for the night. Too glossy looking. Although pretty, I want it matte. Time to google some more.

There are a few different brands that make matte finish clear.

You should be able to use Dupli-color matte. You only need the K2 stuff on areas where you have gas...like the tank...
Also I like they way Dupli-color sprays...seems like they have the best spray nozzles

Thats true but the 2k finish is much much more durable and has a nicer finish then the others, i was not aware of a matt finish in them though.

Paul, you might already know the following, but with clear-coat be sure to apply it during a day with little humidity in the air or the results might fog up on ya. (...don't ask me how I know this)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Well actually Jim, my incident with the clear-coat fogging up after I used it happened when I was still living about three miles from the beach in SoCal and during what is known as the "June Gloom" time of year when the SoCal coast is overcast and foggy much of the time.
(...and of course it was only afterwards that a guy familiar with painting told be about this phenomenon)

Retarder. But that is hard to get in the can. I kinda guessed (being what Arizona is after all) that your learning curve was experienced in California.

Yep, "live and learn", as they say! (...or should that be, "experience is the best teacher"?...OR maybe "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again?!)

I have been real happy with Dupi color engine enamel...I got the low gloss and shot my lower forks, triple tree, rims and other chrome bits...seems to work well. Haven't had any chips or other problems.

I have reverted to using this but i am convinced I do not have the technical ability to paint a saddlebag so it is even. I am painting, messing up, drying, sanding and painting again. The only way i can make it look even is to put a gloss clear coat on it. I am rubberizing one base and putting on the decals (srew on) and calling it a day. Freaking frustrating. I am sure it is because

When I did my tank and fenders I used Dupli-Color lacquer. I read that enamel was hard to work with...So I shot lacquer wet sanded 600 grit, shot more, wet sanded 800 grit , shot a final coat. Then sanded with a 1000 grit then shot clear. Wet sanded 1500 grit, shot more clear, wet sanded with 2000 grit then buffed it our with white rubbing compound....
For the other stuff was engine enamel, but I wasn't looking for a completely smooth finish because of the location of the parts, forks, rims and stuff that would get hit by things.

I was looking at lacquer. Do you have any pics with the final product. I will research white rubbing compound. Not sure what it is. I am okay with this product for now but without a clear coat on it I am unsure how to care for it when it gets filthy with road grime

I will take some pic's this weekend...have to wash the bike (not to good at that)...by the way I am not a painter, this was the first time I tried it..so you may not have to do all the sanding, but also I was shooting outside in my side yard that would block the wind. You could make a pvc frame with plastic drop cloths to make a "spray booth"...
On each sanding I was looking for a even sand flat surface. So when I would sand you could see high points (dull from sanding) low spots (glossy). Each time there would be less high/low spots.
White rubbing compound is all so called white polishing compound. You can get it at any Auto parts store. I used to use this stuff to rub out surfboard repairs....

I am looking forward to seeing how it looks and may use the technique when I need to repaint. This is the shot of them with some light I shortened the signals using the lamp nipple chrome spacer technique. Only took an hour after I got the parts. I am happy with the results but will research if there is a polishing compound or some other product that will clean and protect the paint Thank you all for the help. Paul

Paul, I wouldn't fret it all that much. When I did my tank, I just used the Dupli-color enamel, color sanded with 400, clear coat, and hit with 800. Compounded and then polished with 3M products from Pep Boys (Still kinda pricey @ $25 a quart, each), and waxed. End of story. And you saw it. It's just average. nothing special. It WILL get scratched, scuffed, even chipped after time, just like anything else it this world. It's the character! Believe me, NO ONE is gonna "stare down" and criticize your finish as much as you. NOPE . (IF they do, tell'em to F-off!) It will look as good as factory, which is never really ALL THAT GOOD, if you REALLY look at them close. IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD IN THE PIC'S.
And you may see me tonight

I just wiped it off...it could use a good buffing and hand waxing but I think you can get the idea: Tank: Fender: Misc parts shot with engine enamel with no clear coat: PS I like the way you have them...I would leave them alone

I just washed it so a few more: The lower forks and triple trees are engine enamel Side view What I like about this one is the fender supports and tail light are gloss powder coat and the fender is my paint job...they match fairly well

That is a pretty snappy paint job for out of the can. I may have to emulate if I am looking for gloss which I will be soon on another bike. Very nice. What is that hanging out the right side where the airbox used to be?
