Ya know I’m like most motorcyclists and enjoy ribbing the other guys a bit for what they ride but for the most part it’s all cool. If you love a Honda a Victory a Harley a Hyosung that’s fine, hey I’m just glad not everyone rides a Triumph. What I don’t get is people buy one brand but are in love/fascinated with another brand. Or maybe you’ve never owned bike in your life and never will but you wear the shirts, etc. Here’s an example, my son’s father-n-law “who fashions himself a hard azz” goes out a buys a used Honda VTX 1800, purplish in color. I’m pretty sure this is the one and only bike he has ever owned. Of course he needed a leather jacket, what’s he buy. A $350.00 HD jacket with Harley-Davidson emblazoned across the back, whatever dude! I rode with him only twice and with his problem keeping up and the whole Macho Man attitude I was quickly over it. He kept the bike about 18 months and then sold it, probably needed new tires I hadn’t seen this guy in some time, so we show up at a get together last weekend and there he is in a new orange and black Harley-Davidson Team button up shirt and cap. So I had to ask, you get another bike? Nah, I’m over that, looking at a Mustang I just don’t understand some people.

Hey! I wear shirts with polo player and pony on them, but I don't play polo. I tried it twice, much harder than it looks, evidently the same applies to this guy and motorcycling.

hahahaha i am kinda funny about that too Michael. i went to a service call recently and in the driveway was 3 Izuzu Troopers with full window size hd bar & shield decals in the rear window. so when i went inside i ask "who rides the hd?" they all responded "nobody why?" i said because of the stickers and they replied something like "just thinkin they were cool" hahahaha i had to ask does hd pay you to advertise for them they chuckled and said no and i said, you know there was a time when people were paid to advertise for them like that. i kinda think that if you have no involvement in a company, why would you wear something of theirs that so boldly display's their name. i mean i understand wrangler jeans puting a little logo on their pants but i dont think i would ever wear a T-shirt with their logo emblazened across the front. i proudly wear my Triumph clothing and decals and such because i am very proud of the product and its supiority to other brands but untill i buy stock in or own the product, you dont often find me wearing things like coca cola t-shirts (i dont even drink sodapop) hahahahahaha free to them advertiseing that you pay them to do its one of the greatest ad scams ever!!! everybody wishes they had an hd and they talk about how good their chinese cloths are made hahahahaha go get a pair of Millwaukee boots go get a Barneys leather!!! why do you feel the need to wear hd clothes?? beacuse it makes them feel like they are in a "cool" group!! but its funny to me that when you ask them why they wear that stuff, their only response is "its cool" hahahahaha
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

I've told the story before about the young man wearing a "If it ain't a Harley, it ain't sh-t" tee that split on my 76 Bonnie unknowingly in front of me. After the confrontation and he cleaned it up, I found out he drove a rusted out Honda Civic with a HD decal in the back window. He owned no bike of any kind.

Branding. Its the greatest advetising idea ever dreamed up. Those people are branded like so many people through out the modern world are. They don't know why they wear a t-shirt with HILFIGER in bold letters all the way across the front of the shirt or why they paid $60 for a t-shirt. They don't know why they buy a pair of Air Jordans when they don't even play basketball. They flip on the tube and are bombarded with comercials and celebrities with these products so they go get the same. In many cases I don't think they even know that they have other opptions. And many time higher quality with more affordability options. Just the other day a woman brought in a Coach purse for my wife to repair, because the gromets holding the straps on had pulled through the strap leather. This Coach purse is an extremely expensive purse, but its utter crap. Just watch this

Speakin' o' "Branding", Chad... I remember a few years ago when I first spotted some early 20-somethin' kid sportin' a T-shirt that had the name "Hollister" emblazoned across the front of it. Now bein' an "Old Guy", I of course assumed that the kid had gotten it while maybe attending one of the Hollister motorcycle rallies in that little central California town made famous for the biker "riot" of 1947 and where they started up this rally again in 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of said "riot". Well, when I asked the kid if that's where he got his shirt, he looked at me like I had two heads and said, "No sir! This shirt is made BY the Hollister Apparel Co, but sorry, I don't where their factory is." (...I of course have SINCE learned that there is NO affiliation whatsoever with either the town of Hollister, the infamous "riot" of 1947, any present day rally, nor motorcycling at ALL for that matter...nope, it's a brand of apparel all the "cool young surfer dudes" are wearin' nowadays!)

Actually the branding on apparel started probably before most if not all of us were born. One thinks of Brooks Brothers sports wear or the one most of us are familiar with Izod Lacoste, the crocodile. No it's not an alligator, it's name after a famous French tennis player, Lacoste know as the Croc, he had a huge nose. Why Brooks Bros. has the sheep, I don't know, maybe it's about wool or something very disgusting. I do know Coach purses are expensive, my ex had about six of them back in the 80s. Those were indestructible, but like everything now days quality has suffered.

They were cool, my younger brothers both had them, my youngest sister had a pink one. I had a full size JC Higgins, Sears I think, with a huge balloon tire off a Huffy on the back. Times have changed, I remember growing up when a kid's bike was like a grownup's car. Baseball practice, swim team, Scouts, you name it no one was delivering you in a car, if you were going you were peddling.

Yeah, I had a 10-speed Higgins I purchased at Sears too!
It came in quite handy while delivering newpapers on people's doorstep.

I'm thinking that in some cases there is some basis for the collective outrage but I have news for ya - That woman with the Vanderbilt jeans isn't Gloria and of all those people who don a team shirt on game day, only a few have ever touched a ball. Likewise, not everyone who has a piece of H-D apparell has ridden one. I also wonder how worked up we might become if we stumbled upon someone with a Triumph shirt sans the seemingly required scooter? Why, heck - Back up to a mirror and look at that Levi stamped on your arse. Do you own stock? Did you know Levi? Have you ridden Levi. I guess what I'm sayin' is Lighten up, boys and girls. We've got our panties in a bunch over nothing here kids, and that could put a stain on the fancy tag. We'd be far better off helping ol' Bob with that lifter problem. I love you guys - even when you whine. Now where the hell did I put that Farm-all shirt of mine?

HD makes something other than clothes? Seriously, HD owners care waaay more about T-shirts than motorcycles.
Otherwise they'd own different motorcycles.

Ya know, something pre 1967 I'd love but anything new screams "58-year-old-guy with gold chains and a cigarette in his hand revving the engine."

Yeah, I know what you and your wife mean here Chet, however the ironic thing about this is that modern C6 Corvettes are probably the best sports cars for the buck out there in the world today.

I think there is a difference between buying something because of the name on in and buying something in spite of the name on it. I have a number of Nike shoes (got a great deal because they had trouble selling size 14s). I have a nice HILFIGER shirt not because it says HILFIGER but because it is one of 3 long sleeve shirts I own that actually fits my monkey arms (37"). I have also looked at buying HD riding boots, mainly because of the size of my feet and the lack of selection of riding boots. Most of the japanese dealers have a great variety of sport bike type boots. Only the HD dealer seems to have a good selection in a style I would wear. Unfortunately they all have HD plastered all over them and they don't seem to be of great quality.

I know tech wise the newer Corvettes are much better all the way around, this will draw some heat and hate, but for my money they haven't built one since the 60s I'd want.
All the "creepy post middle aged" car guys I know have been that way since junior high. Two that come to mind, one is a MD, the other is a engineer at Ford. The engineer is Italian, so he came out of the womb with the gold chain.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I keep it plain and simple. I don't need to try to impress anyone. And with any of my material items they only need to impress me. Now Im not a slob or a snob, I can dress up or dress down but either way Im still me. And I wasn't born with instructions or labels, so why do I need them.

Yep, this thread could change the action verb and still make sense:
You DRIVE a what? You WEAR a what? You EAT a what? ....
Marketing is a little (well not so little anymore!) invention so that the product that was conceived and made for a very few be sold to the general public as a "I-need-it" kinda thing.
Things that have made me tick over the years:
- North Face down jackets made for high altitude climbing worn in town when it never goes below 5C.
- LV purse all wrapped up in protective paper, and kept in the closet at all time because "I don't want to use something so expensive, it might get a scratch!" (I had to ask why it stayed in the closet, you see...)
- A 2006 Yamaha FJ1300 with 56km on the odometer... in 2011
- an iPhone (I cheat here as I have an older 3GS, but even that one, I don't use it to it's full capabilities)
- a 5-million-dollar home theater.... (other than just showing off to your so-called "friends")
- high heels, when walking on the beach (but it always makes me laugh!)
- people who diss my Hyundai (Matrix, don't think it's available in the Americas) and gloat about their 2013 CR-V / Explorer / that big Lexus, ... but mine has been doing it's duty to carry me around and to the beach every weekend with all gear for the last 8 years...
- seeing a person buying a new sub-10-lbs featherweight all-carbon bicycle worth over $5,000 when they are carrying a few extra pounds themselves (and no thighs nor calves to show for)
- people telling me : "the red jacket is warmer than the blue jacket, right? I know the blue is better for the rain." say again?....
Yep, I could go on....

That's like the cager who has the HD bar and shield on their rear windshield. Or my 350lbs nephew who has a diet coke with his 5000 calorie meal.
Heck my mountain bike is circa 1983. Too bad for retailers that I don't give a dern about fashion. My eye glass doctor says I'm bad for business. Why? because my Rx lens last over 10 years (actually they last until I loose them) The last pair of sun glasses Rx, I lost then found like two years later. Buy glasses every year? Are you crazy?

Let me make an addendum to my previous statement. I don't have an aversion to brand names. But I don't buy anything for the label or logo, (except sports related items) (WAR EAGLE!!) anyway I tend to but for QUALITY. That is unless it's just too far outta my price range then I consider it disposable or temporary til I can afford what I really want.

Well, I also much prefer buying quality over quantity. I have bought North Face stuff (back in the days when they used to make good stuff... I have a sweater that is 15 years old that still looks and feels great!), later switched to Mountain Hardware, then Arteryx... (I used to be a mountain guy... and a manager of an outdoor shop! The only Nike product I have is a 25-year-old pair of cycling shoes (they used to have a series of really good cycling shoes) that I still wear! I HATE stuff that I have to throw away early because it failed.... I also have a Kawasaki shirt.... but it was given to me by the store I bought my first bike (a Ninja 650R) then exchanged for my Triumph!

I'm not a mountain guy, there aren't any mountains even close, but I do own some old North Face stuff, sleeping bag, jacket and tent. It's all quality goods. I think a lot of purchase choices have to do with life style and economic choices. For example, I'm not rich, but I never buy cheap tools, I only want to buy them once. I don't buy cheap clothing, I don't wear a suit every day like I once did, but I had to go to court two weeks ago for a client's divorce. Both lawyers admired my suit, asked where I got it. Yes I had a dress shirt with a polo pony, a very conservative tie, black cap toe oxfords, and braces. They didn't believe me that everything I was wearing was over 30 years old, the shop I bought it at has been out of business for at least a decade. My point is that some things are timeless, worth the price and someone will be using it after you're gone. NOTE: Unless you get buried in it.

The Apple fan boys crack me up. They'll pay any amount for anything white with an Apple on it.
...and stand in line to do it.

I've always been a Microsoft fan, it's what I learn on in the business dept. of college. My ex was in acedemia and gov., they were an in for Apple. So we never had a computers at home, only the office. Looking back on how tech progressed Apple was better at the time, Microsoft had no menues, it was all prompts. But, I agree why pay more now, but people have there personal preferences and it's their money.
As far as phones go, I buy the cheapest avialable and don't even use all the features, it's a phone. I do use the phone camera, accidentally, I've got great video of lint in my pocket.
