Hey All. I got a dose of fuel the other day that looked like creek water. By the time I got home (30 minute with the choke open) the bike wasn't happy. Anyway, after a good soak and clean out, Syncing and adjusting the carbs it runs OK, but now there is a flat spot. It isnt in any particular range, just cruising along and there is a small pause then runs again. Sometimes accelerating out of a corner or turn and it spits a couple of times then goes. The mixture has been tweeked but apart from cleaning the carbs and the sync nothing has been touched. Local mechanic suggested its running a bit lean, but hasnt any experience with this model. Any ideas anyone Thanks

An old fashioned sediment bulb filter would help if the quality of your available gasoline is an issue. Erle, a member here sells some nice ones. They trap and segregate particulates and water contamination better than any modern filter, I'm aware of. Remove the glass bulb, dump out the crap, replace, and go. Old school tech? Yes, but it still works.

When you had the carbs apart, did you cover or partly cover the hole in the slide with the plastic clip that holds the slide spring? That could be the cause.

Insert the needle into the piston and fit the retainer. Position the retainer so that it does not block the air hole in the piston.

The hole in the slide, like moe posted in the pic of above, bottom right illustration. That 4 pronged plastic clip should not block the hole.

Thanks for that I am having similar symptoms with a dead spot right off of idle and I never thought to check that in all the times the carbs have been apart and adjusted and tweaked trying to remedy this.

And yet the Triumph documentation NEVER forgets to warn us to disconnect the battery! Why can't they document the hidden petrol filter? And in this case, the fact that the, as yota says, retainer doesn't obstruct the slide's vacuum relief port upon reassembly?
