The Levis thread. Politics. Perot? Not a fell swoop of the Hammer, just a bit of editing there.
The E-15 thread. This is difficult as relevancy is paramount. Thus far, political banter has been kept at bay. Thanks.
In general, the issue of politics has been finding it ways into many threads.
Much easier it is to hammer a thread. Yet oftentimes those threads have good, non-political, post as well...Keep it clean folks. (keep the politics out of em!)

Politics finds it's way into more and more conversations for the simple reason that politicians force their way into more and more aspects of peoples lives. If politicians, and bureaucrats, were not issuing new mandates that affect motorcycling there would be much less talk of politics in this forum.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Don't worry about it Moe. When in doubt take the FJ approach and hammer away. You and Chy are doing us all a great service in being the Administrators and took over when times were tough. This site could have disappeared if it wasn't for you all. So keep the hammer down. You're doing a great job

You know Jim, there was a time I used to love the political banter on here, which, because of its pretty much civilized and self-restrained nature was very much tolerated and accepted.
This trend was suddenly reversed (and the hammer of smiting became pretty much the norm) in about August of 2006 when a certain newby at the time came on and started spouting his jingoism and vitriol in all directions.
For a time, I personally felt I was in a kindergarten.
It would seem to me, that in latter times (also possibly since said member doesn't frequent this place any more) that FJ (and others) loosened up a bit and didn't react unless the "unwritten" apparently (or should I say possibly) extended boundaries of decorum were exceeded.
Given your own comments and positive approach, I am happy to see that despite the few threads/posts of a political nature currently running, there are no hammers flying.

Saddly politics is taking over more and more of our lives, and our riding. So as it creeps into our lives and life styles, its going to creep into here. However as it has gone so far I think at least it has been civil. I know you have to draw a line some where, and will at some point bring the gavel down on some post and even threads. We will be fine with that when it happens, and you will have my support totally because I know you are a good guy who is only looking out for the best interest of the group as a whole. I think that this group of guys here are good enough friends and wise enough people to not think this a platform for political agendas, beyond what is required for us to have the information needed to protect our life style/sport/hobbie.

I think that as long as people are respectful and realize that others do not share their opinions, and in fact may be totally opposite, things can be kept civil. Unfortunately, some seem unable to avoid vilifying anyone with whom they disagree. And that's where the problems start.
There is certainly enough political vitriol on the TV and radio that we don't need it here.
And besides, we all ride Triumphs and as such have proven ourselves cut from a higher quality cloth, so respectful disagreement should easy enough.

When government is small and it's influence limited, politics (and lobbying) is less important and is a small part of most peoples lives. When government grows to gargantuan size and seeks to control everything, politics (and lobbying) become vitally important as people need to influence government to protect themselves and their interests.
This is pretty much exactly what Moe (and other mods in private) is talking about. Inserting political opinion into a conversation. And even tho Moe's statement was about politics, it was really about HOW politics are discussed, not WHAT the politics are. There's a difference. Yes sometimes we let things slide, and sometimes we just plain miss it. But regardless of relevence and opinion, that's the way things are. Like Soren said, there's a forum for relavent topics. And don't whine about "exposure at the bottom of the list"! I've heard it all before

Yeah, maybe a few Ade, BUT as I recall there WAS only ONE guy who had a permanent tag line that mentioned somethin' about his "proud jingoistic" demeanor, wasn't there?! (...though like I said, at my age, this ol' brain o' mine IS startin' to play tricks on me now!!!)

I'm never offended when a post of mine is deleted or I am ask to delete one on a PM, it's just no big deal to me. But, I must say, I thought the Perot video was relevant to Made in USA jean comments, besides after two decades that election has more to do with history than politics. I thought the poster was making an economic point, hence my reference to Adam Smith. This mourning, when I saw this thread before leaving for work I thought the most incendiary political comment made was deleted, it's not.

OK, at the risk of ending my short career here - been wondering about this - one thing that has drawn me to the motorcycling community is that many motorcycling enthusiasts (understand not all) are also great lovers of individual freedom. For instance the Patriot Guard Riders and like-minded groups. I do understand this is an international forum. Nevertheless, I think perhaps what brings us together in this passion (beyond the Triumph brand) is a love for that basic human instinct of freedom, which transcends borders and political nomenclature. Yet, I get the sense from some of the more vocal members here that this is not really the case. i.e. that these considerations/affiliations are imbecilic.
What I don't invite is a lecture about how backward I am and how I need to expand my horizons. I have lived overseas in England and Sicily for 6 years and have visited several other countries including third world locales. I am educated, PhD in science. Furthermore, I am over 40 and have five children. Not braggin' just saying that I have been around am not a ignorant hick.
I will concede that there are three potential perceptions/interpretations here:
1 - that I should just get a Harley and join the knuckle draggers
2 - that my early impressions of this forum are not representative of the group overall
3 - that I have it pegged - in which case the question will be whether you will tolerate an unenlightened ignoramus such as I!
OK, there is my concern. I don't expect to be banished from the community, but have come to terms with that it may be that I am most comfortable just interacting in the technical forums and not in the informal lounge where it is more of a free-for-all.

I'm still not sure what you perception of the site is, but I have met many people here and most are very cool and non-judgemental. Even though we rant about Harleys (isn't that a game we play?) most are open to whatever your ride and glad you ride. At the rallies not much is said about personal politics or what group you are involved with. I think maybe you should stick around a while longer and don't take offense to some of these long winded threads that aren't necessarily going anywhere.

I like ignoramusesesesses. We have opinions and positions on things and discuss them. Doesn't mean we want to force them on anyone or that it is a requirement to be friends. I for one have a very good friend I used to ride with ,(he moved to NC),he is very liberal in his views, I tend to be conservitive and we go back and forth all the time but never any anger or argument. We both laugh at each others views.I think that is how most are here. I just used that as an example since that is a subject that tends to cause arguments or split a group. We will never all agree on everything but we will agree on somethings.I even agree with Chet sometimes.

Carl, don't abandon the lounge for this, or avoid going to rallies and meets either. There's a couple of members here who are politically opposed to each other, and sometimes their discussions have caused threads to be locked etc. But I also know that when one is in the area of the other, they will call in and have a drink and chinwag, so while things might get a bit heated on here, in real life they like each other.(Don't tell them I said that ) Besides, its fun watching people trying to get round the AUP

I occasionally lurk on other sites and have observed how things get out of hand easily when politics (especially during the silly season) are openly discussed. People who would otherwise be good friends and drinking buds go off kilter at each other's throats on-line and it can get downright nasty when there isn't a moderator to calm things down a notch. This gets even worse when the mod/site "owner" is bent one way politically so that he allows those with his own views to stomp on others who are at the other end of the spectrum, yet bans or joins in on the stomping when the other guy has made a good point or two. Many on other sites don't even get involved with the discussions.
I support the decision to keep politics out of this forum, as it just gets nasty quick otherwise.

No, this is a special place. While, fortunately, politics are wisely limited, it is amazingly civil (though definitely snarky) in the incidences where it slips through. The fact of the matter is, I agree with Ian all the time, just not that often politically. At the end of the day, we all basically want the same things to happen, we just disagree as to what will cause it to happen.
