I have been fighting tailbone (Coccyx) since November 2011, it has cut my rides down to about 150 miles (the last 50 very painful) and I need a week between rides when I go that far.
I have had cortisone injections twice by a good ortho Dr. in town, did not work. I see a Palmer School Chiro Dr. every two weeks with good results until I get back on the saddle. I have a hard time sitting on any type of surface for more than a few hours at a time. I had a custom seat made shortly after I bought the bike and it did not help, I went back to the stock BA seat (one of the best stock seats on the market), I have tried to alleviate anything that may be causing the problem, even cutting off the center back belt loop on my jeans. I ride with forward floor boards and I do notice that the more I can scoot forward in my seat (almost resting on my lower back) the better I feel. The forward position does put more pressure on your tailbone, if I sit up straight and slightly forward I can ride longer but in the city it puts me too far away from my gears & rear brake to react quick enough if needed. I am 60 years old & I am just chalking it up to anothe old age pain that I have to accept, I was offered the tailbone surgery and refused. The healing time is about 6 months and because of the area it is very prone to infection. I wish I had an answer, I miss my old days of 1000 mile rides in a couple of days.
