I thought you guys might appreciate some real displacment and HP! This is an actual engine and is the largest in the world built right here in Japan. Read the particulars and hopefully I can get a picture inserted.

The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today. The Aioi Works of Japan's Diesel United, Ltd built the first engines and is where some of these pictures were taken.

The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98". Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version.

Some facts on the 14 cylinder version:
Total engine weight: 2300 tons (The crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.)
Length: 89 feet
Height: 44 feet
Maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm
Maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm

Fuel consumption at maximum power is 0.278 lbs per hp per hour (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption). Fuel consumption at maximum economy is 0.260 lbs/hp/hour. At maximum economy the engine exceeds 50% thermal efficiency. That is, more than 50% of the energy in the fuel in converted to motion.
For comparison, most automotive and small aircraft engines have BSFC figures in the 0.40-0.60 lbs/hp/hr range and 25-30% thermal efficiency range.

Even at it's most efficient power setting, the big 14 consumes 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour.

Sure it's big.. and powerful.. and efficient.. but let's see it go round a corner!

So what do they actually USE this beasty for? Driving a ship or something?

Yes, actually. It's for container ships.

That is awsome, I wonder how much a rebore is? I should imagine looking at the size of that thing it does not feel as though you are working on an engine.....

There is an article in "Science & Stuff" about this engine, and they say that "Boss Hogs" is already at work trying to design a motorcycle around it...

I wonder if Wiseco makes a big bore kit for that one?

Not quite as big, but the TBM on my job is pushing close to 1000 hp.

It's a two stroke, Benny. No cams.

Based on the picture, I would think something that big would be pushing much more than 1000hp! NHRA top fuel engines, based on standard small block automobile engines, can produce upwards of 7000Hp and are a fraction of the size!

Cheers,
Brad

Yeah Brad, but those top fuel engines don't last very long producing that kind of power .
The Diesel engine in that TBM has to be reliable and long lasting. Much easier to repair them outside the tunnel

Exactly, and torque is it's strong point. It'll chew thru the hardest stuff you've ever seen with 2 million pounds of force pressing it forward.

You can't beat a diesel for torque, that's for sure I just thought that something that size would put out much more power than 1000Hp.

Cheers,
Brad

holy cow: "108,920 hp at 102 rpm". and, if I read it right, 40 gallons of fuel/minute.

As a retired mechanic on engines this size, I believe you or your source for the largest engine information is not correct. The Borgmeister & Vien multiple fuel engine is much larger. Second behind them is Fiat.
Look it up.

Ade,
That is exactly the page I was trying to load but, I couldn't figure out how. That is quite a beast. I see JC referred to Boss Hog working on a frame for it but, I figure it would be a good place for Honda or BMW to make an opposing 7 cyl out of it. I know what you mean by the Bond movie deal. Pretty wild.

Relax, Benny, there's all kinds of ways to soup up two Strokes . Why, just opening the ports, and fiddling with the back pressure (expansion chambers) can do a lot .

Sure it's big but can it bring you to the nearest ice cream parlor?
