Less chance the intruder would sue you for their injuries , or come back with their gang friends and get even with you.

I also don't own ANYTHING worth even getting involved with THAT kind of drama, but aside from the fact that I don't OWN the wife or kids, I would go through hell before letting them become a casualty.
I've always preached to the family that if you can, grab the gun on your way out the back door. JUST RUN LIKE HELL, and when your out of harms way, call the cops. But if your cornered/confronted or can't get out, shoot to kill.

And I totally agree with you Dave, Why in the hell would you need a AR-15, or equivalent!
