Anyone ever re-packed the baffles on their Epcos? I love the look, love the sound in general, I just want to tone it down a little. Soften the bark as it were Also looking for sources for packing material. Thanks!

JC Whitney or any dirt bike shop for packing, I repacked my Eps last winter, remove the one retainer bolt and use a block of wood and hammer to persuade the core out. Use Stainless hobby wire to fasten the new packing on, helps to spray a little WD-40 in the tube when reinserting. Make sure to do a nice and tight wrap and tie job or it's a fight.

Is this the stuff you used from this website: JC Whitney muffler packing How much do you need. I want to repack my pipes too. They are much too loud.

One package should be close to enough, but the stuff is so cheap, buy two, just in case you need it for the install learning curve. Don't forget, Stainless small diameter hobby wire and a decent pair of scissors and nipper/pliers. I made up a ring the same inner diameter as the pipes for a "go/no go gauge" for the re wrapped insert. Sure helped the core slip in easier the second and final time, did I mention the learning curve?

+1 on tight warp...I didn't do that and didn't tie off the wire tight enough...I all blew out when I was traveling form CO to CA...600+ miles of open pipes and I was ready to leave the bike along the road....

stainless steel zips are fairly easily and accessible. what is the benefit. the hobby wire is cheaper and thinner?

Stainless Safety wire is obtainable from Fastener and Bearing suppliers, hobby/art/craft stores and probably EBay. I did a spiral full length wrap, save them purty SS zip ties for something that shows. IMO

My wife has a jewelery business and she has loads of the stuff in different diameters in her supplies.
She gets it from Fire Mountain Gems online but you could get some from hobby stores.

Yes. She said those are good places to get it. Just ask for stainless steel hobby or jewelry wire.

Just finished the repack. Took less than an hour. the jewelry wire worked great. the stuff I used was .018" in a 255' spool. Ties easily with a twist in between knots.
I forgot but the EPCOs sound better with the packing in rather than out. Maybe I am getting old.
I didn't use the packing from JCW. I went to my local shop and got some sheets of it instead.

Thanks for the heads up! I have the original packing in mine, I just feel like it's gotten a little harsh over the years so I wanted to put some fresh in there, maybe pack it a little tighter, and see how it sounds.

Wow. You will notice a big difference in sound when you re-pack them. Use stainless wool if you don't want to re-pack them again. But glass wool gives a slightly deeper sound than stainless.

Thanks for the shot! That's on my winter project list. Someday.... I haven't pulled the carbs or done any kind of tune up in many moons, so I want to pack the pipes and clean/tweak everything for next season.

Don't pack the wadding too tight or it acts like a solid and won't silence effectively. It is important to secure the wadding securely with the stainless wire at the input end of the silencer otherwise the wadding will start to compact to the output end. Good luck.
