Id say normal with OE pipes. Did your mech give you the before and after measurements of the valve shims?
Did you make sure he knew what the specs were for the clearances?

I didnt do mine till almost 24k miles and I barely needed to do anything. I cant speak to the valve noise when it was done cause my pipes are "robust".
