Additionally the vast majority of the shootings are committed with illegally obtained weapons.
That's probably true for most individual shootings in the commission of other crimes but is most certainly is not true in regard to the mass shootings in recent history.
I read once read that the majority of guns used in the commission of felonies in NYC were originally purchased legally in Virginia. I can't recall the source so I can't verify it's accuracy. I'm sure that a good number of those illegally changed hands after the initial purchase. There is even some sort of nickname for the firearms pipeline that I-95 provides but my aged brain can't recall that either.
