This is becoming a drag, not to mention an actual emergency in some areas. It's 111 here in OK. right now and 103 in Death Valley, CA. There's something wrong with that picture. Our AC went out in our bldg. at work with the outlook to fix it not until next week. I just told them, see you next week and took vacation time. It would be nice to just take off on the bike for a few days but it's too hot. Still dreaming of taking off every July and August to the Northwest coast or Rocky mountains. Maybe when I retire.

I'm pretty sure this will hit us in higher food prices. Even if the drought didn't REALLY affect anything, the middle managers would SAY it did so they could justify higher prices. (Remember the sinking of the Exxon Valdez? Sink one tanker in the World and the price of gas goes up 30 cents overnight.)

It's affecting plenty. Corn crop is fried so no feed for the cattle so they're getting slaughtered which will mean short term drop in beef prices and long term much higher. Produce is getting hammered.

It's bad.

Food prices!, who needs food? I'm worried about ethanol prices and supplies, fools and their money soon part, well our money.

Food prices are part of the cycle, its normal when weather goes awry. Livestock can be fed silage, so its not a total wash. When there has been over production, prices have been crazy low, so we have benefitted from that time. With the ethanol being such a glutton, it has created a steady and large demand, so it has changed the game, but the producer can adjust over the cycle. It would be nice if our govt stopped paying farmers to leave land fallow and let the market be the market.

<== not an angry face but my "it's HOT" face....
you know it is August around here when it gets hotter the faster you ride...i.e. blow dryer on high.... but at least it seems a couple of degrees cooler than last year...hitting 107 in the Fort today...glad I'm headed to Fayettiville for an outside turf conference, it is always cooler up there by 3 to 4 degrees so only 103-104 for me today....it will be nice to get a break from the 107

One month ago the blow dryer on high effect wasn't in place, thank goodness. Riding through the Black Hills then across the Great Plains, the temps were in the 100's though. What kept me cool (even side-standing for 10+ minutes at a time for road construction) was a Cooling Vest.

A cooling vest does nothing for the hot air at speed. What does is a face shield. Windscreens? grrr. Riding Cinnamon Girl home from Brian TX last August '07 her Summer Screen came about this close to taking flight as a Frisbee.

What is the difference between the face shield blocking the air vs a wind screen? Evaporation. You want the evaporation effect. Thus a jacket to break the wind yet allow sufficient leakage to dry you out. Perforated or textile, each allows far too much evaporation. Not to worry as increasing fluid intake compensates. What about a full leather jacket with all vents zipped? When worn in conjunction with a Cooling Vest, the evaporation is controlled, a fluid reservoir is in place for the evaporation we must have, and we end up drinking less water and staying appreciably cooler than if we were to wear a textile/perforated jacket.

The Englishyankee (Greg) always wears his full leather Triumph Jacket. Although he does not use a Cooling Vest, I always wondered why he wore such an apparently hot jacket? Evaporation, again. Riding locally the use of a Cooling Vest is a pita. My Triumph Jacket, the full leather one, the one used with a Cooling Vest, is worn without the Cooling Vest for local rides. Completely unzipped though. The Textile and perforated leather jacket remain on their hangers. I stay cooler and more hydrated wearing the full Leather Jacket. Is that why the englishyankee wears what he does? Should we all emulate the englishyankee? For yous nertherners: Connecticut Yankee.

As promised here is an interesting graphic from NOAA, not Noah, depicting 50 years of the US's experience with drought.

We remember our best year, worst year and this year. I wonder if this parallels the english yankee's choice in riding gear?

Moe, I too learned the value of a full face helmet a few years ago verses a shield. I do however believe in the small fly screen. This takes a bit of the direct wind blast off the chest area and directs it over the helmet thus alleviating the wind blast fatigue of long rides at the 70+ mph range. I also agree with the full leather jacket scenario and discussed in the past with the infamous Englishyank (Greg).
However I do own a mesh jacket and utilize it to keep the blazing sun off of me more than a cooling factor.
When we did the Southwest last summer in the scorching heat all four of us were full face and fully covered. Same setup I used this year to the Midwest rally in 109 degree heat, works for me.

WOW! Look at that drought map for the year 1934, and when the infamous "Dust Bowl" effect was sweeping through Paul's locale of Oklahoma. It's by FAR the worst of any of the years shown.

And so Paul, don't feel so bad, dude.

I mean if worse comes to worse, you Okies back there could ALWAYS do what the Joads and thousands of OTHER families did to escape all that...hop on Route 66, or better yet NOWADAYS hop on Interstate 40 and head out to Cal-E-forn-I-A and where those cool Pacific breezes will soothe your fevered brow!!!

(...of course, then again, housing prices out that-a-way NOW are a HELL of a lot higher than they were when Steinbeck wrote lines such as, "Wherever there's a cop beatin' up a guy, I'll be there, Ma!")

Interesting stuff, Freedom. As Dwight mentioned 1934 was the worst but it looks like 2012 is shaping up to be in competition and it's just August 1st. Maybe I should dust off my "Grapes of Wrath" in case I have to read up on how to bug out.

I saw a documentary on this a few days ago and while this year is bad they said it would have to go on like this for a couple years to be as bad as the dust bowl.

Well, actually modern farming practices like crop rotation, not leaving fields fallow, etc. supposedly would prevent dust bowl conditions of the 30's. But Dwight's description of cool pacific breezes cooling my fevered brow, sure got me thinking. If only I had money and wasn't a lowly social worker and could write prose like John Steinbeck or Dwight...sigh.

I will wear my leather Triumph jacket on most hot days. (This years midwest rally was the first time in 25 years I haven't) But I wear it on hot days to show that I'm crazy and that way people leave me alone.

A few other variables have changed, as well. The Dust Bowl resulted in soil conservation and water use guidelines, etc. Without those kind of changes it would be even worse than it is.

I am absolutely convinced God could come down from Heaven and tattoo "This is the global climate change I was talking about" on everyone's foreheads and it wouldn't sway a single opinion.

Two months ago, James Lovelock, the godfather of global warming, gave a startling interview to msnbc.com in which he acknowledged he had been unduly “alarmist” about climate change.

"Give them an inch they will take a mile." Poluted air is still not healthy to breath so if pumping out CO isn't raising the temp here on earth at least reduce for the next generation so we can say we did just in case it really does have an effect on climate change. Or not and roll the dice, we won't be around so who cares.

I am neither scientist nor politician so I'll leave the debating to folks more qualified than myself, the fact is here in Delaware I have 3 fields of dead corn due to drought, I am not irrigated. Do I think we are all doomed.....no. Do I think were having a dry year, yes.
