You can get an unbelievable amount of water flowing off your roof.

Amen to that. We also intend to make good use of the roof by adding solar panels.

I live in the most humble of all abodes. I am not wealthy, nor does it matter. When I go I won't have much to show... yet, I am RICH. I have friends who love me, gardens that feed me, a roof to house me, toys to amuse me, health to invigorate me, a community to embrace me, surroundings that inspire me, mentors who enlighten me, music to uplift me, ba.com that puts up with me, a voice to share me, and on and on and on and on. I am soooooooooo blessed and I am grateful. Grateful and satisfied and ready for more the world has to offer. And I challenge David Rockefeller, Bill Gates, or Conrad Black to top that because at the end of the day, it's not the one with the most stuff the wins, it's the guy with the biggest smile on his face. Life is good... savour each moment!

Before we downsized I was planning a solar hot water system. As my home heating system utilized hot water from the water heater running through heat exchangers I would have been heating my house as well as getting my hot water.

The cabin was too good to pass up, though.

The every so elusive quality of life. In my journeys I've found that if you focus on the positive aspects of where you are the negative ones don't seem as bad.

++1 We get that on Cape Cod. People want to make it suburbia. We live on what is basically a sand spit and people want to put in kentucky bluegrass lawns and have an irrigation system in it. This time of year it is all out of state plates, all the time. The majority are from New York and New Jersey, with all the bling and tshirts advertising their glories. A third place entry, but no less annoying, is Connecticut, however they do not seem to advertise their glories quite as much.

From June to the end of August, I only leave my house to work or shop.

Well GEE then, Ted. In THAT case, doesn't that kinda cut down EVEN MORE of the time you can be ridin' your Triumph???...between the times you guys there in the Northeast have to "Winterize your motorcycles", of course!!!

(...hey, JUS' ASKIN', dude!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

If it makes you feel any better, we live in a quiet NJ mountain lake community and are inundated in the summer by what we call "flatlanders". These are invaders from NY and the more urban/suburban parts of NJ. You can smell these people a mile away by what they wear and drive, and how they behave.

As much as we love summer here, we look forward to the tranquility that returns after Labor Day weekend.

In the summertime probably one in three cars in the western North Carolina has Florida plates and is piloted by the deadly 'Florida Blue Hair'. They tend to drive 10mph below the posted limit and slow to a crawl at the first hint of a curve.

A popular bumper sticker around here reads, "If it's tourist season why can't we shoot them?"

My life is good as long as I have AC. OK is unbearable w/o it. Plus cost of living is at least a third of what it is in CA, NY, Dallas/Ft Worth and Denver.

I thought this quote from P J O'Rourke concerning, cars, cities and suburbs is relevant to why many don't like big city life.

"Cars didn’t shape our existence; cars let us escape with our lives. We’re way the heck out here in Valley Bottom Heights and Trout Antler Estates because we were at war with the cities. We fought rotten public schools, idiot municipal bureaucracies, corrupt political machines, rampant criminality and the pointy-headed busybodies. Cars gave us our dragoons and hussars, lent us speed and mobility, let us scout the terrain and probe the enemy’s lines. And thanks to our cars, when we lost the cities we weren’t forced to surrender, we were able to retreat."

Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. H. L. Mencken

I'm just not built for heat. At least not anymore.
