Land Rover drivers do the same. I think the "redneck", or as I prefer rural, thing is part welcome and part acknowledgement to a stranger "you've been seen". In rural areas where everyone knows their neighbors and there isn't much of a law enforcement presents, that's probably not a bad idea.
