On the way home from work today the left cylinder stopped firing. Got Black Beauty home ok, and pulled the plug & tested for fire....and found no glory. Swapped the plug wire from the right side....and got lightning. I Definitely have a coil issue at this point. I read thru this thread thinkin I might have a similar issue, all the wire connections are untouched at this point. I'm thinkin the CDI is toast from the 1500 mi run to the Midwest rally & back and 100+ heat for the first 3 days of the trip. Any suggestions on what / how to check the CDI?

Well, I re-read thru this thread and checked the same resistances as described. Guess what! I got nothing (that is to say no measureable resistance/continuity across the primary or secondary winding of the coil on the left side. Time to upgrade to the Nology coils I figure!

Hey Karl,
If you are getting zero on the secondary windings on the ignition coil, you've found your problem. You should at least get 15,000 ohms. Primary will only show about 1 ohm. I'm guessing the right side coil tested ok.
Coil is a lot cheaper than a CDI unit though.

Yep, the right side was fine, I got no reading on the primary or secondary on the left side. Just placed my order for the nology profires w/ Fast Eddy. I'm thinkin he's still out burnin roads with Stacka so it'll be a while before I'm back in the saddle.
I am relieved that the coil toasted here at home rather than on the road to/from/around the Midwest BA rally last weekend!

Ian, thanks for the offer, but I want to replace both coils as a pair w/new. Granted, Eddy is probably still out rolling with Stacka & it'll be awhile before I get the replacements. But I gotta let my case of monkey butt from all the riding I done to/during/from the Midwest rally heal, so the wait is not a problem for me.

Just got the new Nology Profires in the mail today. Got em on ol Black Beauty right away this afternoon & took a nice long ride. What a difference! I really notice how much improved the entire powerband was in respect to accelleration! Thanks Eddy once again!

Well, yeah, if the OEM Gill coils were malfunctioning, then the Nology coils (actually rebranded PVL coils) are gonna perform better.
FWIW, I didn't notice any performance difference whatsoever between the OEM Gill coils & the Nology coils on my bike.

Ken, up until I washed the bike after getting home from the Midwest rally I had NO performance problems with the coils. Black Beauty ran very well across the entire band with the stock coils and my mpg was awesome w/no evidence of cold spark on the plugs when I replaced em @ 12K miles. I may be slightly exagerating the improvement in performance, but I do notice that the machine is more responsive to the throttle.
