Too many good films to list! The dirty dozen, the wild bunch, from here to eternity ...

Yeah, I remember him in The Poseidon Adventure. Great support character actor. Always played what he did best - a guy who was a few pennies short of a quid

Probably playing poker with Rod Steiger in the afterlife. And, how come Eli Wallach still going strong at nearly 97? I'd have thought he'd want to join in the game.

RIP

Alan

Let's not forget "McHale's Navy". PT73

I remember this show as a kid in b/w.

Also, as "Cabbie" in "Escape from NY" W/ Kurt Russel.

He was unemployed after the war, could't find a job he wanted to do, his mother told him he should try that acting thing.

Lots of B movies and TV, but the first serious movie he actually stared in, "Marty" in 1955, he wins an Oscar for Best Actor. Everyone should see "Marty", then compare his acting in the earlier "From Here To Eternity", and later films, "The Wild Bunch" comes to mind. The man could do anything, unfortunately, casting wise, as Smokey points out, "Not just another pretty face".

Ernest was one of the greats in my opinion, I agree with MACMC...see Marty, it was a great movie. He was one of the last of the "Real" Hollywood men.

Great actor, and from all reports, also a very nice gentleman off-screen.

(...RIP Ernie)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I always remember him, even as a young kid cos my mum always pronounced his name as Earnest Bor-gig-nee, in fact she still does bless her, she's 87 now! It got me watching his films though. RIP.
