I replaced the Progressive 412-4252C (heavy duty) rear shocks with Progressive 440-4214C shocks.
I ran the 412-5252C HD's on the second preload setting & found them to be a great handling set of shocks, & far better than the OEM shocks fuctionally, no question. But they could be harsh in some conditions.
I heard a lot of good things about the 440 series, so I thought I'd give them a try. I sourced a set from DHP Motorsports (Direct Harley Parts), quickly shipped to my door, with no drama, for $449.95 total:
440-4214C I like 'em. Are they worth the extra cost over the 412-5252C HD's? That's a subjective answer. For me, I think so.
I installed the 440's & tested them on a known route that includes a mix of crappy two-lane, expansion-heaved interstate, & decent pavement with tight curves. With no adjustments whatsoever, my impression is that the 440's are smooth, plush, & well controlled.
Bumps that I know would have heaved my arse off the seat with the 412-5252C's didn't launch me with the 440-4214C's. Pretty cool, from my perspective.
The 440's are staying on.
