I was just informed by Joe at Libby's motoworld, that my 06'America needs a new electronic brain. $500.00, WOW. I did not know it had a fancy electronic unit like that. Have you ever heard of this or had one replaced?

I had to buy a new ignitor a few years ago, before Procom was selling them for our bikes. The price from Triumph was at least $100 higher. It hurt.

Obviously the CDI is part of the ignition system. What does it do? Why does it cost $500.00? Triumph tax? Part may take two to three weeks to get to Libby's Motoworld. If it comes from Hinkley much longer. It is prime riding season and I'm in TBA riding withdrawal.

It is an "improvement" that replaced your points and condenser.

If they had points and condenser I wouldn't be $500 into fixing a BA and still have a bike that doesn't fire on one side. I could have replace the entire points ignition for much less and guaranteed it would run. Like right now the problem with Wendys bike I could simply run a new wire and make sure the points are not grounded or burned and it would fire.Worst part is I replaced the CDI and still no joy and I have no way to look at the CDI like I could a set of points to be sure it is working right.

Your wasting your time with these young fellars on here Ian. But it's always the same thing with modern improvements. Less maintenance equals more money and less "do it yourself with some baling wire". And this is a good place to inject my now standard " I hate new cars". Stupid electronic gizmos and engineers that are "way smarter than you are so we'll make sure no one can change this part".

what does CDI stand for?
Unfortunately, we don't have cross reference parts numbers, because our bikes and BMW, both use Gill CDIs. Here is a link to explain what the Gill CDI does, there is some interesting info at the link.

I totally agree, newer cars are way worse as to complicity, than our bikes are, and I could live with a points/condenser/coil ignition as well.

I wouldn't even mind if they at least made them so a mechanical ignition could be retrofitted like.....I hate to say it.....HD.

Here's my further. I can go 7 thousand miles or more on a good set of points, maybe more with a little cleaning. Takes about ten minutes to change or clean them. Cost is about $12. With electronic, I never have to clean or set anything, but when they go BAD, it's 5 big ones. Yeah, I know, the CDI is a hotter spark, but I'm not convinced it's worth it. Many on here will disagree with me and Ian, but we've done both for years now and the benefits of CDI doesn't outweigh the negatives. All in all, it doesn't matter cause we don't have a choice, but it does make us feel a little better by bitchin. Right, Ian?
