I too recently purchased a similiar motorsickle. Had the original tires on it with only 1,182 miles on the clock. I elected to leave the tires on as no sidewall cracking was evident. That was April 4th. 10,000 miles later Prudence has a set of ME880s on her. The rear was installed in Helena MT.

Point? Sidewall cracks evident? Change the tire as you have already said you are doing. (Fresh rubber, as Ed noted above, is just so freaking nice.) Otherwise, if you can wear out the rear tire in a reasonable amount of time, keep it until you do. If you think you'll approach the tread wear indicators within a 6 months or less, replace it now.
