Yeah the other night, turned the key, hit the starter, just a chirp and then the headlight died, now nothing. I checked every fuse, none broke, switched a couple mains around with the spares. Nothing
Any ideas?

That $35 OEM relay on the frame spine, 'neath the tank, that you can get at the electronics store for $3 and change? I have had the exact same experience twice now, two diff. bikes, both times the relay.

My first guess also. Relay gave up.

No but you have to pull the tank anyway and it'll be pretty obvious. Right side of the backbone next to the flasher relay.

Yes. Might want to clean that socket considering the condtion of those pins. Tommy, take that relay down to Pep Boys and get a new one.

I'll give you my SlingBlade explanation of what might have happened... check the battery cables for looseness. This happened to me, the black negative cable was practically falling off. I tightened it up...VROOM! ... or maybe it's out of gas. (the real SlingBlade explanation  )

haha....nope thats a picture of one on ebay. I havent had time to take the tank off and fiddle with it.
Pep boys sells them? Man I cant stand going to a place like that and asking for a part that their computer cant help them with.

Don't tell them anything, just say you need to replace this relay. Hand it to them, the pin out and schematic are on the can. Autozone managers take training from a corporate lesson plan to learn the parts business so you might go there. I just seemed to remember a lot of Pep Boys joints in that region when I was in high school.

Napa might be an option as well, if y'all have them in your locale. Roadie s advice about "just give me one of these" is spot on, best not to confuse the kid with pimples with undata ed requests.

I have had that happen to me on a number of occasions...ALWAYS the relay was at fault...you can remove the relay and pop the black cube cover off of it...clean(sand) the contacts (like you used to do with automotive points) and that should buy you some time till you find a replacement...then keep the cleaned on in a saddle bag as a back up...I have had to replace that relay 3 times...I never paid $35 for the Truimph OEM relay ($12.00) but as others have said a $3 or $4 dollar item at most automotive retailers

Also no need to remove the tank to access it...you can get at it without doing so...but the first time you might want to at least remove the rear bolt holding the tank (under the seat) to be able to "hinge" the tank up to see it and how/where it connects to the bike (little rubber slot on the relay holder) BTW...DO NOT attempt to remove this relay with out removing the tank when the engine is hot!...don't ask how I know this

Yeah I usually go to Advanced Auto cause theyre just like NAPA but are actually open and have parts in stock...haha. (N.A.P.A.=Never Any Parts Available)
Thanks for the info Rob, you got me really hoping its just that relay since my bikes an 03 and Ive never replaced it before. Nice to know I can get to it without taking the tank completely off.
Can you remember which ones the relay when looking down on the backbone of the bike?

got a relay from pinwall
nothing good happened
anything else to check?
I checked all the fuses with a test light
cleaned the terminals on the battery
cleaned the terminals on the starter solenoid. Could this be bad?
how could I check my ignition?
how can I check the battery with a multimeter?

You can check static voltage on the battery with a multimeter, however that won't tell you the full story. If the resting voltage is less than say 12.6v it either needs a charge or a replacement. A load test is necessary to confirm. If you don't have a load tester then you can pull the battery & take it to one of the chain autoparts store & ask them to load test it.

They can, yes, although I'm not saying that it did. Load testing the battery will rule that out, however.

I use a cleaner called DeOxit. Spray a little on the surface and then plug the fuse, in a couple of times to burnish the surface, followed by dielectric grease to seal the connection. Really, you could do the same with WD-40, I just use DeOxit at work and it's my favorite cleaner for these situations.

I had a similar issue recently. It was hard to tell, but one of the 30 amp fuses was blown. I replaced them both and I had power.

I took a 12 gauge wire and put it across the two large terminals on the sol....my bike turned over...don't hold it there just bump it

AH...I think I have some deoxit somewhere that I used on my buddies fender amp. I'm on it
I tested both 30 fuses with a test light, they were good.

so ingnition on, then bump the terminals briefly?
but I dont have any power going to anything right?
So starter not working isnt even my concern at this point, its just seeing my headlight, blinkers, brake light work no?

So you're thinking the switch? Have you tried the other switch position to see if there's power?
