So, I had new tires mounted before the GA rally - I figured I'd suck it up and pay to have the oil changed at the same time, since it was in there anyway..... I don't know what oil he used (independent shop) - but it really sucked. I have put 1800 miles on it, and decided to change out the oil and filter. shifting was clunky, engine seemed clickier, just generally the bike felt unhappy. I know this is a holy war....but in the "for what it's worth" department, I put on a KN-204 filter, and filled her up with Repsol fully synthetic 10w40 4T racing oil. WOW what a difference. She goes into 1st smoother than she ever has since I've owned her (1 year), and shifts are smooth. Engine seems quieter too. Anybody else run this oil? (it was 63 bucks for a gallon)

Repsol is what my dealer sales, I'm running it.

I made the mistake of letting the dealer change the oil on my 81 CBX750. It was my first big bike. and they put in the cheapest stuff they could find. I had to change it because the oil temp light kept coming on! I mean how cheap a brand do you have to use to get those results?!! I've put some pretty cheap oil in over the years but this stuff was like water... Mmm there's a thought actually lol.
I use normally but not the pricey stuff because I don't trust those additives n stuff. Still put 31000 miles on that bike after that and never saw the light again.
The Garage actually went bankrupt Not long after that, so at least some justice in the world.

Not familiar with that oil but I hope it is motorcycle specific without friction modifiers. The oil needs to be safe for the wet clutch. I run Amsoil motorcycle 20-50.

It is a motorcycle oil. Like I said - loving it so far.
Fizzyhair, I think maybe your shop pulled up pegs and moved here or something. What crap they put in there. I refuse to even go back after that. (which is a pity, because it's hard to find someone here who is *willing* to work on a triumph, much less knows what they're doing). I do most things myself anyway - but sometimes you need an expert...

Yeah, the 4T shows that it's a motorcycle specific. I've been using the Mobil One 4T Racing 10W40 since my first oil change eight years ago. Noticed a difference with that first change. I tried a 20W50 once and experienced similar to what you did plus my gas mileage dropped.
The shop probably used a non-synthetic higher weight oil.

I noticed a huge difference in smooth shifting and quieter engine when I switched to Motul 15/50. There are a lot of good oils out there. Stick with what makes your bike happiest.

Mobil 1 is great oil but not the one you got, that one is the car oil. Still good oil but not the motorcycle oil approved for wet clutches.

First off this is not a sales pitch. I have been an Amsoil dealer since the late 70's and that is what I use. There are many good oils out there but, don't be confused by the fully synthetic thing. Only in North America are highly refined petroleum oils allowed to carry the synthetic banner. Just food for thought.

You can run M1-15/50 EP (extended performance) if you want. No worries with that. I would not run M1-5/50, however.
