Your ABSOLUTELY correct!

There was a good article on sizing the bore of a master cylinder to the size (and number of pistons) of the caliper(s) used in last months THBC.
Bore size WILL affect the lever pull/pressure and the hard/soft braking feel, and needs to be matched for optimum braking.
