Hmmmm, for some reason that looks a bit different than what I recall on my 03 and 04. What year is your bike.
My best guess is it is designed that way and because you did not have the cable seated all the way that was the source of the rubbing issue.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge of this will chime in.
