Hey all!
Well, I recently went through a carb tune up exercise. First, I disassembled and cleaned them all out thoroughly. Then I went ahead and balanced them. After those two steps, I developed a bad flat spot on a slow roll on the throttle. So, I disassembled them again, looked at what jets I had (42/160). So I bought 45 pilots and used the jetting calculators to come up with 155 mains. I popped them in, reassembled and man what difference! It amazes me that I ran that long on a bad carb rig.
So now that that's all done, I got to looking at the throttle cable assembly on the carbs to make sure everything was okay. That's when I noticed the front cable (the one that shuts the butterflies) was rubbing against the metal linkage. It seems like the cable metal piping is a tad bit over so the cable is on a slight diagonal.
Can I just bend the part that the piping mounts to? Did I overlook something when I reassembled? I just don't wanna have the cable snap on me because it chafed through.
Thanks all! Louis

How about a pic of the cable as currently installed?

Yup! Right in there. I could get over it if I slowly rolled on. If yanked the throttle it shot over 3500 rpm but not so much w/ a slow roll on.

Yup! Thanks moe! For the most part. The left cable in that picture is the one that is rubbing. It's like the cable piping is to far to the left (from the perspective of that picture) and its rubbing on the left edge of the throttle linkage (not pictured).
I still haven't gotten a chance to run down there to take a snap.

If I recall that is not the greatest of designs and does not align as properly as it should, IMHO. looking forward to your picture,

In pic one it seems the cable stop is not properly seated in the guide. And the right side of the guide looks bent. I would straighten that out and reset the cable stop.
Pic three shows the angle of alignment I referred to earlier. Not a great design, IMO

Good eye Mike! I didn't get a chance to take a close look earlier. That cable stop does look like its in at an angle and not seated all the way. Also, the right side of the guide does look bent. I hope that wasn't me trying to "nudge" the guide back over to straighten out the angle.
I'll try and reseat the cable in the parking lot before I head home from work. As for bending the guide back, I'll try to do that tonight w/o taking the tank off. If I do have to pull the tank and carbs, do you think it can wait till the weekend?

Probably, but I would loosen the slack and get it seated correctly, and throw some lube on the cable,

Well... I loosened that throttle cable and tried to reseat it.. no luck there. I got it in and seated correctly with my fingers/pliers but it just popped back to the crooked position like in the picture because of the angle I think.
So, I guess I'll be pulling my tank off after dinner. Its driving me crazy knowing that cable is like that. I don't want to have to deal with a throttle cable busting again (thanks Dad [capt_lou]).

Alright... the carbs got pulled. Is this what that linkage is supposed to look like? To me, it looks like it could be severely bent or just designed that way. Should I attempt to bend it back to a straight line?

Hmmmm, for some reason that looks a bit different than what I recall on my 03 and 04. What year is your bike. My best guess is it is designed that way and because you did not have the cable seated all the way that was the source of the rubbing issue. Hopefully someone with more knowledge of this will chime in.

She's an 03. It looks like its designed that way to me too but it seems like a bad design like you said. It only needs to be shifted over a couple of mm's.
Maybe the top bracket where the cable gets mounted could be twisted a bit.

Take your Handy dandy medium duty needle nose and tweak the right cable holder (the gold colored bracket) so that the cable ends up directy above and straight shot into the cable end holder at the carb. Line em up nicely and it will be happy. Those gold brackets get mangled pulling and replacing carbs, are also easily adjusted for zero cable drag.
I am talking about the third picture. Tweak the part holding the cable that has the two 10mm nuts over a tad.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

The picture showing the cable adjusters is like on my 02. In my several times adjusting the throttle cables at the carbs, I was amazed how it was almost impossible to turn the adjusters and lock nuts, especially on the left side. As they are hard up against the bracket that holds it all together. I'm not sure about the other linkage question, but in my opinion it is a bad design overall.

It goes a bit easier if the bottom nut is backed off, the cable threaded rod is popped off the bracket, the top nut is adjusted to the proper length, cable assembly is reinstalled, and the bottom nut is tightened. It also helps to make sure that the top nut is properly positioned in the bracket before tightening the bottom nut. Each cable is adjusted separately. It can be a bugger, but doesn't have to be.

That's what I get for letting you ride my bike... You broke my throttle. Actually it was the Iso grip and where the cable end attaches. But I was the guy who rode it home that way.

Ha! Wasn't my fault! It was actually rewarding that I handled a "crisis" situation that well. ~55mph and losing all throttle and quickly pulling into the shoulder. I've never seen someones hand shake as bad as yours did when we got back though! Talk about muscle failure!

Thanks Dinqua!!! Sometimes it takes hearing a learned hand to get the gull up to do some things.
So last night I sat out there for a while w/ the needle nose pliers and just bent and fit over and over again till I was happy. So now, there is no more rubbing!
I just wish I knew how long this had been going on. The cable seems to be in okay shape. There was one strand (I mean one hair sized strand) that had broke and there is a crease or two in the cable but the overall integrity looks okay.

Yeah that's what happens when you ride 45 minutes in Memorial Day beach traffic with the thottle housing open and your thumb jammed on the throttle cable to hold it on the end of the grip and try to turn it together and still be able to get to the brake lever. I couldn't feel anything in my hand. But it worked!
Glad you got your throttle problem fixed.

I agree, but will stick by my assertion of it being a poor design. It shouldn't have to be that complicated. Loosen one nut, tighten another. Why have to pull the rod off the bracket in the first place?
