Howdy all,
So, this morning I decided to ride my 2007 America wearing a vintage 1968 HA helmet. This is the first time I've ever worn anything other than a full face helmet on my bike. Getting to my point, things on the bike are louder with a half helmet and I noticed this rather loud hissing sound coming from my right side...the chain. It was extremely audible and the phenomenon was exaggerated as I rolled past parked cars. It's a little unnerving, but I suspect 1) it's normal noise from the chain that I'm just not used to hearing in a full face helmet or 2) it's abnormal noise. Any suggestions, would oiling it help? I haven't oiled the chain for a few thousand miles so I suspect that may be the culprit. She has 9500mi on her, if this helps.
Any info would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Oiling a chain never helps! (where is John to make his comment ) Hard to say without hearing it if it is normal but from what you describe it sounds normal.

After I posted this, and surfed the web, I realized I've been horribly neglectful in my chain maintenance. I've never cleaned it and only oiled it once. So, it's time to invest in a grunge brush, some WD-40 (just for cleaning) and more chain lube and give it a good once-over.

I'll end the possible WD-40 debate by saying that I'm not going to use it, but instead, I'll use a wire brush and metal shavings from the engine to clean the chain. (That ought to put an end to inevitable WD-40 discussion!)

Baaa i use WD-40 all of the time and have for years, just use it on the cloth and then roll the chain through it as apposed to spraying the chain with it. Honestly my time is worth far more then the cost of a replacement chain after many years of use.
