I will never buy another Ford as long as I live. My wife's Ford explorer blew a head gasket this week. A mechanic shop quoted me $2,800.00 to do the work. So I decided to do the job myself. Now I know why they wanted so much. I pulled the heads to take them to the machine shop. Well the machinist informs me that the cam timing can not be set the way we always use to do it, and pointed out that there are no timing marks. So I had to pull the whole engine so he can use a degree wheel on it to set the timing for these over head cams heads. What ever happened to pulling the heads and getting them milled, then bolting them back on like the old days. It use to take an hour per side to get them off and close to the same to put them back once you got them back from the machinist. It took me a full day to get both heads off to find out I had to pull the block too,another full days work. I hate this stupid truck. The design is so over complicated that it is infuriating. I hope to meet the guys who designed this thing so I can find out first hand how a retard gets to be an engineer for Ford motors.

I have an Explorer (4.0l V6) and the previous owner replaced the cam chain tensioners - yes the engine had to come out for that job.
Cost £1000 which is about $1600
It's an ok car with plenty of room but not as civilised on the road as previous Range Rovers I've had.
Now THEY were unreliable!

Good luck finding anything simple under a hood now. You're best bet is going to be driving pre-70 vehicles if you can live without amenities like A/C and power windows. Plus, recycling old cars is the greenest form of transportation. I guess I'm surprised to hear you say you won't support a company that didn't take government bailout money, too.

Don't get me wrong I'm not buying GM nor Christler either. I'm going to get a mid 70 s or older and start getting it in shape to be the next one.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

I would lobe to support Ford, but as much as I can not support the bailout companies I can not support stupidity. So I shall never buy a new vehicle again.

Be careful even getting an older vehicle. This all started with the '58 Lincoln. The book labo(u)r for a tune-up was over $100 at a time when new sparkplugs cost around 50 cents. It seems you had to discharge/recharge and completely disassemble the A/C system to get at the 2 right, rear sparkplugs. After discussing it with the owner of the car, we cut a hole in the inside fender panel to reach the plugs and fabricated a cover for it. The owner of the shop I worked in called it an outer space car because "The kept cramming stuff under the hood 'till they ran outer space."
The '57 T-bird was another one. They had a lot of problems with the transistor radio and those are nearly impossible to remove.

Those are good examples, but a 58 Lincoln was a luxury car and unlike most, well unless you lives in the south, many cars didn't have air. The original T-Birds were relatively small cars for the USA and there wasn't a lot of room under the hood. I think the trend really started with CAFE and EPA like standards. Much like our bikes, AI, carb to EFI, and even the "d" tool needed to adjust AF mix. Of course the powers that be forget how innovative we surfs are.

My friend has an older Nova and I have to laugh that it was considered a compact car at the time and is bigger than a new Cadi. My 71 LeMans was a mid size car and you could put some of todays cars under the hood.

Ahhh...at last we see the bain of planned obsolescence...tons on "non-user" servicable repair issues. Back in the day all a guy needed to work on his car, truck (et ct, et al) was a good set of tools, a case (or two) of beer, and a shade tree. These days ya need a computer to figure out what's gone wrong (except for the real obvious stuff).

Yeah, I have a similar hate/hate relationship with Chrysler. I've owned two and both of them developed computer glitches that the dealer was never able to fix. They just told me that it was a computer problem and they couldn't fix it.
WTF?
Never again.
I've done pretty well with Ford, Saturn (amazing reliability, RIP), BMW, Subaru, and Toyota.
No more Chryslers for me, ever.

My newest vehicle is an '02. Well, the Triumph and my VW both are. Then a '99, a '67 and a '49. The '49 is as reliable as any of them, if not more so.

I have a '96 BMW and a '97 Saturn. Both are, apparently, bulletproof. Between them 400,000 miles.

I remember the Sun scope, had one when I was a mechanic for Lehigh University. I miss those simple engines.

I used to gap the points on my bike with discarded beer can pull tabs. They were EXACTLY to perfect gap and available at your local roadside.

A friend has a late model Ford pickup with 70,000 miles on it. His age mid 50s wife drives it exclusively to commute. I don't think it's ever had more than 100 lbs, in the back. He does all maintenance religiously. It ate a valve at 70K. Ruined the engine. $8,000 for a new one. Ouch.
The local Ford dealer is a very small operation, with maybe 5 or 6 people working there. They keep this particular engine in stock at all times. Pretty telling fact to keep $X,000 worth of engine on the shelf at all times.
On the other hand, my wife owned a 2002 Mustang GT. It was rock solid. Never had a problem. Go figure.

I've had 3 Explorers. 2 new and one used. The '95 had 140,000 miles when I traded it. Never any problems. I like Ford products and will not hestiate to buy one in the future. I'v probably had about 17 vehicles in the past 18 years. Out of those 4 of them were late 70's model Dodges. I love old 318's and 360's. Wasn't much I couldn't fix. But then again really didn't have much problem with em either.

I live about five miles from the Claycomo- Kansas City Ford plant, they make F-150s there. Whenever we order a new truck, one of our friends walk it down the production line. Just to show how incompetent Ford is, our orders are never correct. Some how there is always some no cost option package added, that none of us remember on the order form.

Ah, but you have to leave it energized to static time it. Okay you should have already set the points with them de-energized before doing that!

Don't know how accurate my recall is, but the tow truck driver last Sunday got to talking about Volvo's and a little plastic gear that might break if the driveshaft is removed guerrilla style. The replacement part number listed for that little plastic gear is the same part number for the whole transmission!

Not a Chrysler fan but the 318, 360, and 225 slant 6 were all pretty much bullet proof. I did things to those engines in the junkyard that would have killed any other but they kept going. The tranny and dif. was their weak points. The 96 Grand Cherokee I am driving now has the same block as those old 318s but injected now. That thing has 170,000 on it now and runs smooth and strong as new. No smoke or rattles or anything. Computer quit on me once.I have seen em over 200,000 and still going, hope mine does that. Can't stand Ford and would never buy another one.If one was given to me I would sell it and buy a truck.

We disagree on Ford trucks, but last fall I got rid of a 93 Cherokee because the floor was badly rusted out, had well over 100,000. The only things I ever replaced were water pump, belts and radiator. The radiator from a hunting accident. It ran as well as the day I bought it new. I've got friends with the same vehicle that have over 200,000 miles and have had no problems. You would know, someone once told me that the 4L six in them was basically a early 50s truck engine.

I wish I had a great story, but unfortunately it was just a leaning metal fence post in a snow drift. Who wouldn't want to hunt with that VP or at least have access to the places he hunts.

I remember on my 72 Ford pickup we pulled the heads did the valve job and put it back in one evening. I changed the carb on my ole LTD in one after noon. It was one of the first years for the variable venturi rigs for Ford. $30 for an old carter carb $20 bucks for a rebuild kit, and 2 hours under the ole shade tree...........bam done. It ran like a top. We once swapped an engine out of a Torino into a Truck in 4 hours.

Besides, with the campaign season at hand and the pressures of it, we could see almost anyone meltdown. That includes we poor bast--ds that have to put up with the endless TV pol commercials.

I had a Ford truck was dependable for the most part , had the 300 6 in it with the 4 spd std trans that had the really low 1st gear so really a 3 spd. It was junked to me with 72,000 miles on it with 1 broken leaf spring and a bad brake line. I drove it for a couple years only problem I had was that ignition module they were known for on the side of the distributor. Was a great car but hated it when there was a load on it. Thing wandered all over the road. So it was good running, drove it back and forth to VA a lot as a car.Then sold it for $1800.00 so got it for nothing, drove it a few years then made money on it so not bad for me.

Those Ford VV carbs were the worst junk I think I ever saw on top of an engine.

That reminds me of a kid that works under me. He has palsy or something like that. Another associate was looking at free doughnuts they put out for us and asked me if I thought they were OK. I saw the kid with palsy eating one and asked him if they tasted good. He said to me without skipping a beat,"They taste OK but look what they did to me." I about fell over laughing. He is a good kid and makes me laugh a lot.

We can agree on that one Ian. I was working at a Ford dealer when they came out. Pure POS.
Otherwise, however, I've always liked Ford vehicles, and all of them that I've had have been great.
Chryslers have been the worst, with various GMs falling in between.
Although I now have a (American made) Toyota.
