How many of you have had a problem with the Keurig coffee machines? Here's my story.
My boys got me a Keurig Platinum B70 coffee machine for Christmas 1.5 years ago and the unit has performed flawlessly. 2 weeks ago the unit started to act up dispensing inconsistant amounts of water and just not working at times. We did the usual descaling stuff but to no avail. The Keurig site stated that the warranty was up and they would send a new unit for $104 including shipping and duty so long as I send them the Kcup portion. Well I hate being beat by a machine and pulled the thing apart. I found that 1 of the 2 solenoids was leaking water on the air pump motor which seized it up. Ordered a new water solenoid and electric air pump from ebay, totalling 30 bucks and the unit is back to life.
It seems that the majority of problems with these single serve coffee machines has to do with water leaking from the solenoids onto the electrics.... Planned failures????? I placed a shield over the electric air pump motor just in case.
Oh, and the units are not made to be pulled apart. The top cover has to come off before the back can be removed. Removing the cover almost requires an explosive charge. Broke two of the 4 tabs pulling it off.

Sounds like you have one of the later "Injected" models. The earlier non-injected ones were so much better. I also have it from reliable sourses that the Red ones were the fastest. Sorry, being a bit of a smart arse there, wasn't I? We have one of these Coffee Machines at work. So far, so good. But since reading this I guess we better keep an eye on it.

I've got a coffee pot similar to this one. I think I got it for $19.99 a few years ago. Still works great. Nothing like a reliable Black and Decker.

I heard if you call Keurig and make a big enough of a deal with customer service they may just replace the device at no charge. They don't make any money off the device... all their profits are in the Kcups.
I replaced my Keurig after a couple years. It was still working ok but the "descale" message was always showing and it made a godawful noise... Didn't know how loud that one was till we got the new one. WOW!

I first saw those Keurig things over in Australia and thought it was bollocks. Plus I wasn't impressed by the coffee it made. When I was looking for a replacement coffee maker, last year, I remembered those French press gizmos. Simple, easy to clean, no descaling, no solenoids, no worrying about if the water is hot enough or is there enough flow. And no having to deal with those little cups. It's simple, works brilliantly and makes a damn fine cup of coffee.

Greg, it's just a cup of coffee. Forget all that digital, electronic, spasmodic gear to deliver what would otherwise be a simple, to-the-point cup o' jive. Cowboy coffee has ALWAYS been the best... add boiling water to coffee grounds, wait 5 minutes then pour. Now, migrate that to a French Press and you're up there with any gourmet coffee delivery system. K.I.S.S. Great coffee need not be complicated. Just trying to help you out, man!

I'm thinking I might have a problem here. Well first of all I have one of the dang dofangled devices called a keurig, but I also have the same normal one Soren mentioned and a French Press that Keith showed us here and ..... also two old camp style peculators.
BTW on the Keurig, mine was acting funny too until I cleaned out the "injector' needle (thats the one that pokes a hole in the kcup) with a paperclip.

We have had our Keurig coffee maker for a few years. We don't have a model that has a "descale" message but did have to descale it a year or so ago. It has recently begun not dispensing or dispensing the wrong amount. If you unplug it and plug it in again and start the process over, it mostly works as it should. It would be helpful to know how you tested the solenoid; remember, if you haven't pulled one apart, you can hardly imagine what the parts and innards look like. Which solenoid was purchased as a replacement and how is it installed? Solder?

yeah i get that problem too, its kinda sporadic though. Ive noticed if I let it warm up a bit after startup it doesnt give me a problem with inconsistant water.
It would make sense if the electronics are getting wet. I have that piece that lets you use regular coffee which just sits in there and spills water everywhere.

My philosophy on coffee pots is to either by the cheap $20 drip pot, or a Made in USA Bunn.

Darn addictions... can't go without my coffee in the morning (went through all the steps, from instant to drip, to French press and finally espresso) and I NEED that nice cup (or 2) of latte I make in the morning... Then in the evening, with temps of 28C and 95% humidity, a nice cold beer (or 2... or 3...) makes it so much more bearable.. (Of course, went through all the steps, from..... oh time for another!)

I had the drip type and the press type, ala the Keithster and the Tim Horton type (every morning - $1.50) and was happy with all of them. The Keurig was a convience that turned on at 4:45 am and made a coffee in 1 minute flat the same every time. Great at household gatherings with dozens of flavours. Mine had the "descale" sign flashing but that wasn't the problem. I've included a link for those interested explaining how to repair along with pictures of the affected solenoid and motor consequence. This Link

Why? I thought the hotter the water, the better the coffee. That tends to be the problem with many run-of-the-mill coffee makers. The water is just not hot enough. Since I got my French Press, I always boil the water. Now, I'm curious.
And yes, the french press method is so damn easy to use. No longer do I have to de-scale. And I don't have to pay through the nose for those liitle Keurig cups. I'm not into flavored coffee anyway.
I intend to have one or two at the house in Thailand when it's finished later this year. It will also work for loose leaf tea.

ideally the h2o should be at a temp between 195°-200°. particularly for an oilier roast--or more full bodied varietal. if the water is too hot, the oils are leached from the bean, leaving a less than savory flavor and finish.

All kidding aside(and as much as I ALWAYS HATE to do that), I gotta agree that coffee DOES taste the best whenever it's done via the French(spit) Press method. (...yeah, OF COURSE I had to include that "spit" thing there...c'mon, there's just NO friggin' WAY I can ever NOT throw in at least the vestige of a freakin' joke around here, ya know!!!)

Thanks Mert. I'll have to try that next time. I learn something new every day.

I've used the press method for years and have two models, single and mucho size. I also have the filter type that needs hot water poured through a batch of coffee. I prefer it to the press. I'm hooked on the Keurig now though. Once you find the right coffee flavour, it is always the same.
Just ticked off with the quality of the machine and the design flaws it has. They used to replace the machines for free but it appears that has changed. They gave us the goodwill clause which means they will sell the unit for $100 less than the original $179, then you pay shipping. As if they aren't making money on the cups themselves.
My sister had hers fail at her business and contacted Keurig. They sent her a free industrial model conditional on her purchasing the Kcups directly from them.

I LOVE IT! THE FACT THAT YOU USED THE TERM "Cowboy coffee" We take the french press camping and I pack it on the bike for campout / rally rides. I also have a single burner for the propane bottle. Makes coffee on the go sweet. We came up with a giving the kids some coffe in the morning when they just really were worn out, 50% coffee and then milk (yea a latte w/ out foam), but we told them it was cowboy coffee.

The keurig @ the office breaks all the time - though for some reason the one up a floor with the brass & other important people seems to have a lower failure rate.
We've used the french press at home for years now.

I got a question, what were those coffee makers that my parents use in the 50s and 60s that looked like two glass globes stacked. (and no it wasn't a bong)

That was a manual drip coffee maker. Grounds in the top, pour in hot (off boil) water, coffee in bottom.
Or not
