I had an email today offering a 31% discount on Metzeler tires if you enter a special code at checkout and since I'll need a new front 110/90-18 soon I went through the cart and checkout process where entering the code is the last thing you do. Well, surprise, no price change for the code and the order was placed with no chance to confirm it at the final price. I immediately called their customer service and got George who said the code gives you 5% off the regular price which is then 31% off MSRP, and if you read the small print on the email it does say that, but much less prominently than the 31% savings banner.

I asked George to cancel the order and he said it had already gone to shipping, but he would try; mind you this was perhaps four minutes after I entered the code and three of that was spent on hold awaiting George. He put me on hold another three minutes and then said it was cancelled. but checking my credit card account just now, it still shows a pending $127 charge and no cancel or credit, so I'll keep watching it.

Beware of email offers, even from major suppliers, and read the fine print before you click.
