Well the wife has been called to the city for her Job (some class) and because of it being her first trip and her boss is on a different schedule (they were supposed to go together) i will be going with her. we will be on 5th ave in Manhatten at 55th. i have all day fri to myself?? was wondering, is there anything i should know or do or whats the best way to get around to see stuff?? is where i am staying close enough to walk to anything or will i need cab or bus or subway. is there anybody that would like to meet for lunch?? any info on this subject would be great as it is both our first times there. i never wanted to fly commercial again ( i am soooo done with that) but i cant see her taking this trip by herself, maybe next time when she is familier with the experience. was thinking it might be nice to supprise her with a horse carriage ride around central park at night, is that a good thing or should i not do that?? will that let you up to the roof of empire state bldg at night?? you know you see things in movies or tv shows and you dont know what to believe. any help would be greatly appreciated!!! all i know is i am free all day fri and dont know where to start.

ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

Never been to NYC myself but wife and youngest daughter just went for a long weekend. They had a blast. They did what my wife and I have done everytime we go to a new city - DC, San Fran, Boston - and took one of the city tour buses. I know it sounds pretty geeky but I think it's the best way to cover as much ground as possible without really knowing where you're going. Well worth the price of admission.

Yep, I totally agree, Doug. That's a good suggestion. While taking those tour buses does sound "geeky", they ARE the best way to get an idea of any great city's "feel" for the uninitiated.

(...btw newt, as it appears you've heard, seein' as how your thread's title is somewhat alluding to it, I've also heard it's best to avoid the Mexican restaurant scene there...seems they're not all that well versed in the matter...

I grew up in NYC.

Go and do it.

Cab, train, bus is the way to travel. Car will be more hassle then its worth.

Check out any of the tourist attractions. Museums, Planetarium, catch a show on Broadway. South Street seaport is one of my Fav hangouts. Time square is a cool place now. The Intrepid is awesome also.

Just bring lots of $! Everything cost and nothing is cheap!

I spent 6 months installing conveyor belt security sensor devices at 5 post office s there right after 9-11. I recommend Times Square, Little Italy for a awesome meal, the big brass bull in Lower Manhattan on Wall St. Battery Park, and the new Trade Towers are down there. Greenwich Village, I checked out where P,P and Mary discovered Bob Dylan. Statue of Lib...Just ride the subway, really quick, cheap and fast. Parking can cost up to $100 an hour, so I stayed in the Meadowlands, West a bit of Secaucus in Jersey, $1.75 and a 25 minute bus ride through the Lincoln Tunnel and boom your in Times SQ. with Grand Central right there and handy, you can go anywhere you want on the subway. Eat a fresh Cannoli for us and have fun. Don't carry a "I Love NY" shopping bag, people will profile you and treat you like a easy mark.

You are staying in a perfect spot to see and do everything. Some good spots to hit nearby are Rockefeller center and radio city music hall. All spry of the same complex at about 49 th between 5 th and 6 th aves. You also have st pats cathedral and saks 5 th avenue which every woman is gonna wanna see. Just north of you is the south east corner of central park on 59 th and 5 th which is also the Location of the plaza hotel, fao Schwartz toys tore ( huge piano scene from the movie Big with Tom hanks) and the flagship apple store. That corner of central park is also where you'll find the horse and carriage rides. Haggle with them. Don't jump on the first price you get. Just inside the park is a small pond which is also a good picnic spot. If you feel like walking, take 5 th ave south to 34 th. you'll be at the empire state bldg. then go west on 34 th and you'll pass Macy's at 6 th ave. this is the one from miracle on 34 th street. At 7 th ave u can look south and see Madison square garden or walk north and at 42 nd street you'll hit times square. Just a little advice for a great walking tour that won't kill you! Be safe.

You buy the ticket, you're gonna see the show.

If you want to see it all in one day , hop on a tour bus. You can get on and off as much as you want . They sell tickets all over the place.

Remember what the Ramones talked about in the song 53rd and 3rd? (you may want to stay away from there)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qcMjKxt-dE

If you think you can, well come on man
I was a Green Beret in Viet Nam
No more of your fairy stories
'Cause I got my other worries

53rd and 3rd
Standing on the street
53rd and 3rd
I'm tryin' to turn a trick

53rd and 3rd
You're the one they never pick
53rd and 3rd
Don't it make you feel sick?

Then I took out my razor blade
Then I did what God forbade
Now the cops are after me
But I proved that I'm no sissy

Ellis Island should be part of the tour to Lady Liberty, if you have any relatives that may of came through at that time, it would be fun looking up their name on the memorial. AmyLee went to N.Y. back in 2006, via the train to Madison Square Gardens from Trenton N.J. area.

driving from my home in Florida to relatives in new Hampshire, my daughter and I stopped at D.C. and NYC. used gps to get to time square. parked the car and went adventuring. had lunch @ hard rock there at time square then took a cab to the statue of lib., then walked the area of ground zero. was a great day...

Having some experience in Chicago, I'd recommend cabbing it whenever possible. Bus routes, schedules, etc can be daunting, and the subway... forget-a-bout-it! get on the wrong train and you'll spend all day just trying to make it back from Newark or someplace. May cost you a little more to get around, but it's, in my opinion, well worth it eliminating the hassle of getting horribly lost and spending the rest of your day just trying to get back to the hotel. just my $0.02...

enjoy the city! also if you have time, talk to a travel agent. they have the scoop on tourist-ie stuffs and can surely can find something for you and the Mrs. to enjoy together.

Bird.
