i believe that the general concensus has been that it's where the headlight switch lived before it was always on.

Or apparently still lives in some non-US markets. From the other thread the last post said "...right switch has 3 positions off, parking light, headlight.....anyway my 2001 america has."

I found a comment that said "US Federal law dictates any new bike made after March 1980 has a headlight which is always on." and another that said in California the always on headlights were required from January 1978, so there's not much need for a place for a headlight switch since 1980 unless it is used in other markets.

So...any UK guys willing to buy some switches for us US folks who want a convenient driving/fog light switch? I don't think we have a parking light position either; seems that is more a narrow street parking European thing.

Mine has a "parking light". On the ignition key turn it towards the front (I think) and it will turn on your rear "parking" light. I could be wrong about the direction.
