I don't remember if we ever got anywhere with finding a switch for the old headlight-off switch location in the right side hand controls. Well, someone on one of the Rocket III forums got it sorted and it looks factory (because it is!). For those that don't know, the Rocket III Standard, Classic and Roadster models use the same hand controls as the America and Speedmaster. Apparently you can use a switch from a 2001 Tiger (UK Model). Follow this link if you're interested. http://www.r3owners.com/showthread.php?2...ll=1#post347705I don't intend to copy and paste the entire post over here and I ask that no one else does, but if someone from here wants to follow these instructions and create their own write up for the America/Speedmaster, I'll add it to the tech vault here.

You can also use a first year UK America, Speedmaster or Bonnie models right hand light switch, if you can find them.

I've posted before, Jack Lilley had these switches in stock back in 2003, but refused to sell. They would only install on UK bikes that originally had them when they left the factory. And yes, I was an ugly American, I tried to bribe them.

Funny exchange there, guys!
And yeah, Mike kinda makes a valid point above here. The only reason I could see for this conversion would be during engine starting and not pulling charge away from the starter. Am I right?!
Also, I wonder if forgetting to turn on the lights during the day might make us even more invisible out there on the road?
(...just a couple of thoughts here, that's all)

I'd like it for my fog lights. The handlebar-mounted switch housing that mounts on the handlebars for the R3 is hideous. The stock switch for the America/Speedmaster is in a horrible location, and I tend to break off the microtoggle switch in my dash.

Ooooh...I see. So this wouldn't be for the headlight then, eh?!

Seconded! My 04 has a mini-toggle on the side of the headlight shell for the driving lights; sure would be nicer to have a switch in the grip for ease of use without feeling around for the mini-toggle - especially with gloves on.

Don't see why it would have to be. The OP said he had "off" "headlight" and "headlight + foglights." So I guess there are three positions.

Ok, I can see that as a option.

Oh, and I forgot, when I hook my laptop up to the EFI, I need to pull the fuse for the lowbeams so I don't drain the battery.

Is that in the UK only?
I ran across a comment that said "US Federal law dictates any new bike made after March 1980 has a headlight which is always on." and another that said in California the always on headlights were required from January 1978. I wasn't aware of that until I bought my 04 America since my last previous road bike was a 1977 Yamaha Cross Country Sport 305 (still in the barn, BTW).
So...any UK guys willing to buy some switches for us US folks who want a convenient driving/fog light switch? I don't think we have a parking light position either; seems that is more a narrow street parking European thing.

That's a good idea there, Phil!
I think I'd be interested in one, depending on what the ultimate charge(cost+shipping) might be.
So, what say you blokes over there, huh?! Anyone of ya's up for this?
But just remember what Mac said earlier in this thread that good ol' Norman Hyde over there wouldn't sell this babies to Americans("ugly" or not, I would suppose).
And so, to any of our Brit friends over there who might be considerin' doin' this little favor for us over there, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT in any manner give Mr.Hyde the impression that YOU might be a Yank, and thus be sure IF there's any written communication between you and Mr. Hyde that you include any and ALL of those superfluous British letter "U"s in words such as "favor"...err, I suppose that would be "favour", huh!
(...though once again, ya might not want to use that word "favor" OR "favour" at all with Mr.Hyde, 'cause if he gets wind that this is a favor or favour for us Yanks over here, he might once again decline to sell these things to you, just like he did to Mac, our resident and self-proclaimed "Ugly American"...RIGHT Mac?!)

In the immortal words of yet another famed "Ugly American", one Mr. Homer Simpson, "DOH!!!", you're right Grzegorz! It WAS "Jack Lilley" mentioned earlier, wasn't it?! NOT Mr. Hyde...nor Dr. Jekyll, for THAT matter. (...my sincerest apologies to Mr. Hyde for any and all aspersions I might've cast his way) And re your proposed "payback" for my delivery to you of a few years ago, my reply is: "YEAH! Cool dude!" Let us know what ya find out. And thanks!!!

Someone else posted a picture of this switch mounted in the housing: From here: http://easternbeaver.com/Main/Elec__Products/Switches/switches.html (third switch down) Says it fits right in the space you just have to find a piece of plastic to fill the rest of the slot. He has momentary and on/off switches. I've purchased from Eastern Beaver before. Seems to be top quality stuff.

Here is another discussion. http://www.triumphrat.net/twins-technical-talk/43286-euro-spec-headlight-switch.html
$160 for the parts new? Any motorcycle graveyards in the UK?

That is exactly the same as the switch shown on the Rocket forum. Probably IS a 2001 Sprint switch.

That's the switch the R3 guy used. The control is different but the Rocket 3 is the same as the America.

Actually I e-mailed many Triumph dealers in the UK, I actually telephoned Lilley. They all were very nice and all responded that sells or import or mailing to the USA was highly illegal. I figured if I was willing to commit a felony, I mise as well double down a offer a bribe too.
