Door casing wedges would work good, would be hard to over spread the clamps using soft wood. The reason for loosening the axle is to give the tubes less resistance to moving and after the moves, you can verify by spinning the axle by hand, all is aligned and good/nothing in a bind, so to speak. Use torque wrenches on Aluminum and your breakage rates will diminish a bunch.
