Now, my druthers would steer me towards BMW though. More $$ but ohhhhh soooo nice for touring.
Dinqua,
I have a 1996 BMW R1100RT (from new) in my stable as my main touring steed. I toured Italy last summer while having totally disregarded its scheduled service (long overdue) and didn't give it a second thought.
An excellent tourer, lovable, reliable, nimble and balanced enough (although a little
top heavy during parking maneauvres) to be able to tackle both highways and difficult windy roads which are pretty commonplace in Europe. The integral panniers are excellent (well designed and aerodynamic) and have ample space for long journeys.
I wouldn't change it for anything.
Sorry image is a bit blurred ... a boxer's vibrations

Blessed are those eyes that have seen more roads than any man! (Homer).
