This is a good place to vent right? WARNING ON MY
Well we got in these muther bleepn P-3 flap track forgings the other day. They are supposed to be inspected at the foundry but something was wrong with their machine or they lost their cert. Anyway one of our bleepity, bleeping program managers said we could do it here. These things suck ARCE. It takes me and another guy about 1.5 hours to inspect 1 and we got 30 of them. Meanwhile all other work is getting way back logged which in turn means really long hours. BTW forgot to mention they weigh around 90 lbs each , our equipment is old as crap and they are a pain to demagnetize. On the bright side should have a really good paycheck next time around.

Hmmmm...bitchin' about bein' overworked here, are ya Matt???

Saaaay, maybe if you'd get 'em to play some Journey music at your place of employment, it might help ease your mind a bit!

Well, THAT certainly seems to help soothe ANOTHER guy's mind around here who occasionally starts threads at BA.com about HIS workload as an airline mechanic, anyway!!!

(...yep..."don't stop believin'", bro!...yep, hang in there, dude!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

When I first saw the subject I thought this was going to be some xenophobic rant, then I put my glasses on.

Tom, this one particular job on the forgings is MT (magnetic particle). What I do as an occupation is NDT (non-destructive testing), I know, I know DESTRUCTIVE would be much more fun. I currently work with an aerospace manufacturing company. Pretty much a over sized machine shop.

Yep that pretty much sums it up. I mean the OT is kinda normal and I like those extra $$ when I can get it but the part about them making poor decissions is what pisses me off. You cant fix stupid.

Ya know Matt, I've just had a little flashback here.

Ya see, my dearly departed Pop who died in 2004 at age 83, for many years did for a living pretty much exactly what you're describing your job is here.

After his stint in Patton's army during WWII, in 1948 he started working for North American Aviation in Los Angeles, makers of the famed WWII P-51 Mustang warbird, the F-86 and F-100 fighter jets, the X-15 experimental rocket plane, and the B-1 bomber among many other aircraft(and a company which would eventually become known as Rockwell International Aviation in the 1970s and the makers of the Apollo command spacecraft module), and I remember a few times when I was a kid at the dinner table when he'd voice this same complaint about the parts he'd been assigned to inspect and would comment about what he felt was poor decision making by the higher-ups in the company.

(...but then again, I'm sure almost everybody in the workforce, regardless of the industry they're in, has voiced these same complaints at one time of another, haven't they?...I know I DID before I retired from the airline industry about 5 years ago now)

Ya see the thing is I actually love the work I do. Its just that a lot uf the higher ups here come from a manufacturing background in the automotive industry, NOT AVIATION. I don't think they grasp the concept, of if something goes wrong you cant just pull over and call a tow truck, gravity kicks in and bad things happen. Not saying in anyway that we let bad products go out, cause I assure they don't, but this is a PITA.

Matt,

Just for the folks here Ill let em' all know that you and I have the exact samekind of job, went to the same training and then ended up with the same head hunter after the navy
AND we both ended up in this house! IT is a small world after all,

I had a 3 week period just like your having last month. The Vendor who makes our 10Ft long lead weights for the spars of the Jet Ranger blades mirror plate UT machine went down. So one night I walk in and there is one of our Lvl 3 Lab guys here and I get to learn the new procedure for the 25 weights AND stay till 4 AM doing them on a friday night.

NOPE I DONT MIND THE OT AT ALL but friggin Fri night!
It was a good deal for one of the manufacturing guy's who never gets much OT cause it's a two man job to put them in the C-scan and back out again. We ended up getting them once or twice a week from 20 to 35 parts at a time. Everything else went on hold. then I worked weekends or at least a Sunday of 3 weekends in a row to get the rest caught up. Yep the money was good, but by Mar 29th I was wiped out.

So I left after 1/2 a night on the 29th and rode all weekend and partied with friends at ROCKERS VS MODS

Yep, they've been looking for a replacement since the late 80's and took delivery of the first P-8A just last month.

The P-3 has been in use since the 60's and the drawing print I have on this forging is dated in 56. Its made of 4340 steel, approx 4' long and about 85-90 lbs. And we have to get it up chest high to clamp in in the machine. Here's a pic of the ugly b@$tard. ( I put a Sprite can next to it for sze refrence).
