I'll tell it in Paul's absence for those who may be curious .. On arrival at the pub/bunkhouse/campsite, we pitched at the bottom of the small field next to a disused caravan.
While pitching our tents, Paul noticed the window was not locked on the caravan. He demonstrated this by opening it and closing it again.
.. forward to later that night / early morning ..
Paul couldn't get comfortable with his camping pillows so at around 1am, he went to the caravan and realised to door was also open. He helped himself to a couple of pillows to help him out. Next morning, it dawned on him he could've taken his sleeping bag and slept in the caravan ... 
It's amazing how an alcohol affected brain functions (or doesn't!!), eh?
